How many people sharpen their mill bandsaw blades and what do you use. I Use a modified Oregon 511a Grinder. Was watching a video of the Norwood sharpener and it looked really cool but only works with their blades.

I get my Woodmizer blades sharpened pretty cheap. I have a 511 and curious how you go about this. If I used my mill alot I would be more serious about sharpening.

I'm interested in how you modded a 511 too. I have a small mill I use sometimes and it would be nice to be able to sharpen the bands myself.

It's basically just a riser for the blade stop. The stop has a groove notched in it for the blade. You have to flip the band inside out and depending on the wear of the blade I'll touch up the back of the teeth gently using a cut off disc in a dremel. Whole process takes less than 15 min and costs almost nothing. Cut quality is as good as a new blade after sharpening. I also have a tooth setter but rarely use it.

What angles are you using and what sixe wheel? I wonder if my USG grinder would work as well. It grinds on the opposite side as the 511's do.

The teeth need more “set” in my opinion..

Especially when dealing with gnarly sticks.

May use more HP, but would be worth it.

I do not know how much you can actually add to the set after sharpening on narrow kerf blades. The teeth are hardened to about the same or harder than a file. As such they are brittle. You can see the heat treat line in one of the pics, it runs slightly below the gullet bottom.
