Anyone use a respirator when milling? I have a half mask by North with Honeywell cartridges. Haven't tried it yet but just got some for organic compound.

Sure do. 3M with p100 filters. Sometimes I’ll use spent organic charcoal filters I’ve used for staining and finishing in the woodshop. Helps with dust and fumes. I’ve been thinking of getting a PAPR full hood with HEPA filters.

Subbed for the recommendations. I'd like to have one for future jobs.

Here is a picture of the half masks. I have the 5500.

Here is a list of all the cartridges available. The link to the Honeywell document is below.

I didnt quite learn this until after I bought my canisters but not all have particulate filtration. If the part number ends with P100 then is has a particulate filter.

From my understanding the HEPA filters are only offered for powered respirators like the PAPR. I've used them at work. A little bit overkill in my opinion for milling but no funky mask pressed against your face is the only advantage. They are hotter to wear and visibility can suck but would probably be ok for milling...

I guess the reason I started this thread is because I didn't know what cartridges I should be using. Is the exhaust from a chainsaw have oil aerosol?

I have the organic filters N75001 with no particulate filtration but was thinking I should get some. I was thinking the 7535FFP100 adapts over the gas and oil cartridges that have no particulate filters.

I could only find recommendations for diesel exhaust. CDC only recommends p100 for that which was surprising to me.

I will say I don’t smell the exhaust at all when I’m using a p100 filter.

Are they 75FFP100NL or just 75FFP100? The NL has odor relief...

These are 3M so I’m not sure. Here’s what the amazon specs say

My beard is long so....dust mask today. Better than nothing. Old dead oak with color and some spalt. Just opened it and afraid to look after the week of break this break that. The mill was a hopping bad till I dropped a ten pound roman candle firewood stick on the far stalk and started leaning on it more. It needs more weight.

Today is hot but breezy. I should get that mask in his pic, nice one, and chop the beard when serious milling in splated wood and others that can be a hazzard when dry dust flys around you.

I run 3Ms 2297 filter, which they call an "Advanced Particulate Filter", still a P100 though, I do feel the 2297 offer the better blocking when compared to the standard P100 pink unless you go full face or run a PAPR like cease232 suggested...which I am contemplating as I have my miller HEPA PAPR for my other day job of melting metals together.

Well, I put the P100 filter to the test on Saturday. They were the 75FFP100NL part number which is supposed to have some odor control and I could smell exhaust fumes still. I'm going to run them over top of an organic canister filter N75001 and see how that does. I'm using Yamaha racing mix oil and it stinks so if I can keep it out of my lungs that would be great.

Now, without going to a full face, how do I keep the fumes out of my eyes?

Much better results with the organic canister and the particulate filter. Almost no exhaust fumes at all. What I did detect might have been leakage from the mask because of facial hair. It was a big improvement.

It depends on the weather and type of wood and if it has poison ivy on it. Wearing a mask in hot GA summer weather means major fogging of the eyeglasses. I would be more likely to wear a mask for oak and cedar, not so much for sweetgum or pine.
