I've seen these hollowed out spots when splitting locust but never saw any insect still in it.
Based on the size and shape of the burrowed out spot, I figured it would be a larve or worm.
Found out today its ants.
This was a healthy standing tree.
I find Carpenter ants in the Honey Locust that I cut on a pretty regular basis but after it is split & starts drying they vacate the wood but those don’t look like Carpenter Ants unless the pigment of the picture has thrown the color off. Carpenters are usually black. Powder Post beetles usually attack the splits I put in the corn crib but didn’t seem to bother the stuff I had outside on pallets.

Those pictured are the biting little SOB's . I topped an 80 foot ash that had those in the top and carpenter ants in the bottom .There I was 55 feet up in a bucket truck getting eaten alive .
