Well, I sold one and tore the others apart and cleaned them up.

Turns out one is a 181SE 1984 build date. The other is a true 288 1995 build date.

The P&C for the 181 are mint. Gonna be a nice saw when I get it put back together.

The 288 has some scoring, so I've gotta cleanup the cylinder and see what's going on.

You are in the heaven land of saws lol.

Please let me know if you decide to sale one....or all three.

You want a 288 ? I can build you one. I have about 6 bins of 288 parts to play with....I've built about 9 so far in the past 2 or so years. Great saws.

I finally pulled the top end on my 288 to see what’s going on with port timing.

The good - I really like the port sizes and timing on my new production KS cylinder. Times at 102/122/75 with no base gasket, 100/120/72 with a gasket in there. Explains why it runs so strong compared to some other cylinders we’ve run around here.

My new production KS on left compared to an old KS on the right: lowers and uppers are bigger on new production

The bad - I had some light scoring on my piston ...what!?!? A closer inspection revealed inadequate chamfering on the exhaust port. I should’ve caught that before I assembled it. I chamfered all the ports before putting it back together and it should be good to go now. The damage it caused didn’t destroy the piston or ring.

Another bad thing happened while assembling the saw. Just as the decompressor was beginning to feel tight it decided to keep on spinning. Crap. I grabbed a plug, which has a little longer threads and it caught some good threads. It’s sealed for now but I don’t trust it. I’ll be drilling and tapping for an over sized plug before I cut with it again.

Side note: I put a gasket back in my 288 so I could compare it to a Jonsered 920 I’m experimenting with. Think it will be interesting, very similar designs but a completely different feel IMO.
