My 394 cover is NOS OEM. It was a friend's 272 I got an AM cover assembly for and just like Joe, his flag broke in short order. The rest of it seemed just fine though

Thanks for the advice, I've been searching for a good used clutch cover but still unable to find one, a new genuine one is $180aud.
The longer I search the more I've been looking at the Chinese option.

Would it be worth posting a WTB in the classifieds here? Not sure how much shipping would sting ya

Well. I should pulled the muffler first thing. But I just got the “temporary “ death sentence.

This will shelf her for a significant period of time. Being that funds and time is short.

Btw only 70psi compression. Hopefully it’s just a piston and not bearings too.

Can’t like that, looks like something was bouncing around on top of the piston. The good news is when you’re ready OEM top ends can be had for $150 or less if you end up needing a cylinder too.

Hopefully I won’t need a top end. It’s a meteor 288 cylender and piston on a 281 chassis. The best part is randy opened the ports up. I don’t want to just slap a new jug on if I don’t have to.

Hate to see that. It certainly doesn't look to good.

If the bottom end is even a little questionable or you aren't sure if or when the crank bearings and seals have been replaced, I would go ahead and swap them out. $50 is pretty cheap insurance to make sure your rebuild lasts
Couldn't agree more with this.

And check that lower rod bearing cage real close for signs of the retainer failing. Had that very thing wipe out a 288 cylinder I was in the process of porting. Brand new SKF bearings and seals and it blew my mind when I pulled the cylinder to make some more changes and found a scratched up piston and plating damage that turned the cylinder into a paperweight

I wish that was a serviceable part on a lot of saws.

You and me both. In my estimation, the lower rod bearing takes the most abuse of any bearing in the whole engine. You can have pressed together cranks from bikes, sleds, wheelers and whatnot rebuilt but not these as far as I'm aware. Seems as though it would be cost effective to have it done if you could source the new bearing and crank pin, a new 288/394 crank is crazy expensive last I looked

Yep it really drives me nuts on the Pioneer saws. Just isn't many parts floating around. I thought I saw someone here tried it, but can't remember who or what thread. With all the talent here I'm sure someone could figure it out.

Yes sir, a few names come to mind that I wouldn't bet against them pulling it off.
