I like a 24 or 28. Sharpening anything longer really sucks.

It came with a 24” hard nose and a pretty beat chain. I was contemplating 28” with the Oregon EXL chain. I like the 32” suggested above but not sure about balance/weight.

So what is the preferred bar/chain combo for a mildly warmed up 288xp Lite? I see that Acres says it handles up to 36” stock. I have an 8 pin 3/8 rim on its way and from what I have read 28” is pretty ideal. This saw is going to be the “big dog” and will most likely see less use than the others saws he has.
If it's gonna be your big saw then get as big as you need

I would get a 28 and a 32 just to have for bigger stuff.

Its not “my” saw, building it for a guy I know. He was running an MS290 and several Husqy 455 (I worked on both to get them up to par) and bought an Echo 590 when all the other saws were down. The local saw shop was HOSING him “repairs” of the saws and were half-assing the work. After I worked over the his saws he tried a couple of my other builds (038 Mag clone, Jred 2065->372, the 041 Super/FB) and asked if I could build a larger saw for the “big dog” duties. He didn’t want to drop $1300 on a new saw and prefers the older tried and true saws. I am pretty sure the 288 fits that niche perfectly. There are some big trees around here but not sure what length b/c is most bang for the buck for him. He is unsure as well since they get everything from scrub brush to 40”+ pines and Willow oaks.

I've only ran a 28 on mine but I have no doubt it would pull and oil a 36 just fine

I agree with DJ, I run a 24" all the time on my Masterminded 288, love the way it balances and seldom need more.

I got a few bins full of 288 stuff a few weeks back to keep my 288 rebuilding kick alive. They came from Canada.

Other pic is of all my 288 stuffs. Ive been rebuilding them for about a year and a half.

Great saws! Love my TM 288.
