Ah, cool. :)

Except regarding the sealing between the AF halves and the carb seating I have no complaints.
I counteract the sealing matter with a thin layer of grease.
I do admit the engineers could have resolved that matter during the two decades these units are in production.
The regular filters on the 7900 work pretty well, but they did fix the problem for those who had issues with the HD filter kit, which prevents anything from getting in.

If the filter on the 261's are lasting 50-100 hours, to me it sounds like the rubber seal is wearing out, if so why not just replace the filter?

Behold, the power and might of the Stihl 011avt filtration system!

It does appear that it kept the bulk of the wood from being digested, but I dont think the guy who owned it knew what maintenance was.

My 011avt keeps out all the chips very well. My problem with it is how all the saw chips get in the cylinder area so bad. Its like there should be something that blocks them from getting in that area. If you make one cut then look in the muffler slots its full of chips. Very simple filter setup that works well and you cam cut your own filter material out of whatever you want.

Anyone have a source for a UNI foam type filter material that’s thin(1/8”) that could be used to make a pre filter for saws.

The thinnest I can find is 3/8” way to big for this purpose.

Like what The Chainsaw Guy makes but I’m trying to DIY.

For a 562 and 572

On my 288xp the factory twin air filter was disintegrating and I went with a dual layer filter. The top squashes it a bit but the filter area is still really big. I cut the neck down a bit to help the height.

As AlfA01 suggested I tried out these panty hose type socks.

They fit perfectly.

They’re pictured on a new 562xp, only 4 tanks through the machine. I’ll run it this weekend.

I bought those too, they fit a lot nicer than the foam one ones. I haven’t run them yet to see if they work as well, I don’t see why they wouldn’t

I run several tanks of fuel before I have to clean a filter, and if the Tree Guys (and pro fire wood guys) around here had the same troubles you guys show, I'm sure they would have gotten rid of their Stihl saws a long time ago.

I see a lot of old 460s that are run almost every day, hard, and often put away wet, and are still going strong … so something must be different.

Usually when I see wood ingestion, the filter was not installed correctly.

Perhaps the Stihl engineers believe in natural selection … as they designed flippy caps and the current air filters … ???

Are they from K&N?

They’re not from K&N.
The link below was provided by AlfA01 it’s where I ordered my set from.

https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/734/42422/PC-Racing-Filter-Skins

But the material really does seem like panty hose. If you got the time and skill, I would just buy or take an old set from the wife. Tie a knot on one end and stretch it around the filter.

I sprayed it beforehand with K&N oil. I installed another one of these socks without oil on a 572xp; I want to test if the oil makes a difference in this application. (comes in a four pack from the link above).

You sure are a piece of work! Does it take you long to get all the white crap off your Stihl’s every night......
