I was sitting here Friday morning sipping coffee and trying to think of a witty (smart a$$) answer to a Mastermind post when this happened...

Highway exit 1/4 mile from my house

My house

Every room in the house looks like this

My boiler "walked" so far during the shaking that it blew out both 1" dielectric unions to the supply and return hot water mains and it flooded the garage before I could get the water off

We were without heat for over 24 hours

Glad it wasn't really cold here

I spent yesterday morning chasing down parts to fix the plumbing and then we got started on cleanup

We sustained some cracked walls and possibly some structural damage under one of the 3 main beams the second story is supported by

48 hours later and we are still having aftershocks numbering in the hundreds

Thanks guys

It's all part of living in Alaska

We have dozens of quakes every day throughout the state but only a handful each month you can actually feel

99% of those don't do any damage

But this was a 7.0 followed 5 minutes later by a 5.7

Next to the big 9.2 of 1964 this is the strongest ever to hit Alaska

Definitely got my attention

Thanks again guys

Yeah, my wife was still in bed and I couldn't even stand up to go check on her

I'd get halfway out of my chair and get tossed right back in

It was one of those "wish I had my iPhone video going" moments

I just went and filled all the vehicles and gas cans because we have heard a rumor that the port of Anchorage was damaged and barges won't be able to dock for a while

My son works for an Alaska grocery store chain and they were told supplies will be slim for a while

Hope it's bullchit but you never know

Most local stores have been wiped out pretty much by folks trying to get ready for any more drama

I just realized we lived a short distance from KYsawman in the early 90s

My wife did 2 years at the Federal Prison in Lexington...

She was on the winning team though

She was a nurse

Worst 2 years of her life

That is something, I grew up about thirty miles south of Fairbanks, still have my Parents and two siblings, and aunts and uncles there. My dads mom worked at the prison in Lexington as a nurse also, it was a rough place to work. She was tougher than toenail soup and didn’t take any trash from any one. Cancer got her finally in the early eighties.

That is so bizzare

Luckily the prison had recently changed to a women's facility shortly before my wife ended up there although there were some women there who were every bit as dangerous as any man

I guess it's back to a men's facility now

We actually lived in housing on the prison grounds

That was a trip

My brother was in Alaska for the one in '64. He said he was working nights and was sleeping in the barracks when it hit. He woke up to his bed swaying 6 foot each way, put his head under the pillow and tried to remember every prayer he'd ever been taught.

I can well imagine

I have met a few old timers that went through it and they all say there wasn't a damn thing you could do BUT pray
