Haven’t posted much the past few months. Bought a house, sold a house, remodeled a house in between. Lots of stuff going on but hell, ya’ll know how that is.

I build more 660’s than any other saw. Lots of them around here and frankly I’m fond of them. I don’t care for them stock but love them with some work. I’ve also got spare cases and parts in general. So......I had a guy that wants a 660 hopped up. I agreed and that’s where this begins.

Not long after guy no. 1 paid for his 660 upfront (which is always nice) guy no. 2 (a logger) wants two 660’s built. All three will be split with new bearings/seals....the whole kit n kaboodle so to speak. I figured Let’s try 3 different approaches and see which saw runs the strongest.

The first 660 case was in pretty good shape/crank looks good so we’ll just split/Rebuild and go from there. I split 7-8 cases that evening....keep that in mind for later.....

Guy no.1 also wants a wrap handle, no problem $34.99 from my Stihl dealer buys the wrap brake flag (1122 790 9102)

I didn’t document pressing the bearings in. I figure most of us are good with that part. I like to press my bearings in though, the Dake arbor press comes in handy for that and I can press bearings in and on to the crank in roughly half an hour.

After I joined the halves together I went to mount the jug to the case and realized that I had grabbed two mismatched case halves (7-8 split cases earlier, notice the color of the two halves in the above picture)

Before we go any further we’ve got to fix the cylinder mount area being different heights. One side was .007 higher than the other. Since I’m cutting the base anyways to set squish at .020 I take .015 off the case.

Now we’re ready to spin the wheel....

After machine work I ended up at 100/126/84. More intake duration than I normally like on a 660. I actually went back and double/triple checked to make sure my wheel wasn’t lying to me. It wasn’t.

I’ve had a couple guys from out west tell me they like 170 degrees or so of intake duration and the saws run well. They’re also running higher exhaust.

For the time being I’m going to leave the intake where it is and raise the uppers to 120 and widen a tad.

I’ll get some run time on it and if I don’t like it I’ll epoxy the intake.

I talked to the owner today and he said he was in no rush for this saw. This is good, allows me time for adjustments.

I polished intake (no widening/squaring) and polished exhaust (very little widening/reshaping). Took pictures but apparently inadvertently deleted them from my phone. I anticipate tearing back into this saw for changes so I’ll snap some them. Nothing spectacular though.

Grind off factory deflector and add a custom deflector in its place. Remove the baffle while we’re at it. Add a red97 deflector on the other side. This is a play/firewood saw so the arrestor stays out.

Nice work, Brett.
Thank you Jon. The first saw is ready for its maiden voyage. I’ve got some chains that need attention and as soon as the weather cooperates I’ll get some video.
In the meantime these suckers are getting built. Fresh powder coat.

May do a 288 piston with fingers in one. I’ve got a few of these laying around.

One I know is good, the others need kits. I’d like to try one in one of these 660’s

We’ll see

I like 100/120/80 on 660’s if I can get there. Problem is some of them have such high exhaust you have to drop the jug a mile and then you run out of transfer roof
I'll sacrifice a little exhaust so I don't end up with a ton of intake and raising the trans a mile
