14304AB0-D3E0-41B4-AA4F-A80A01AE56E6.jpeg I’d go 661 personally. It has mtronic, which I generally like, side-mount chain tensioning, stainless muffler, and you can put a maxflo on it. I don’t find the weight bad, and I’m a little guy. I find the 661 to be a better “all rounder” than the 395 personally.

I was not impressed with a stock 395 I ran at a GTG, but both stock and ported 661s have impressed me.

And if you really want the Holy Grail, have John or someone build you a 661 with a 660 crank … now that saw was very impressive!

I don't remember any large Husky's beating TM's 661s in large hardwood at the CT GTG a while back. I think only one of Lee's monster saws was stronger.

Having put millions of ft timber out with both the 395 and 661 I will go against others and say 395 is the better saw.

Pinched and needing to remove ph is no problem, just takes a different approach.

661 was nothing but problem after problem and that is basing off of 6-7 of them. In stock form on a good day they would not hang with a good stock 395. Trade off is weight and in board vs outboard.

Ive been known to throw a 661 in a River after cranking it 26 times and no start...

Get a 395 ported and dont look back. + a 661 is one flimsy animal if a tree happens to get on it. Just a big poof of orange and white glitter.

Lol

I'm leaning more and more away from the AT and Mtronic models. like most of these saws the 661 has had many issues, though most have likely been fixed. The 661 is definitely a more nimble saw, smoother saw, but I personally don't care when you get to saws that size, as the saw will just be sitting in the log without you having supporting it's weight. The 395 is simply a reliable tank of a saw, and is still my pick. And you don't need to do much more than a MM timing advance and set the squish to really make one run.

I did really enjoy my 395 when I had it though. It is a tough and simple saw. The design has been around for a long time, and it is certainly well proven.
Or you can get a 661 converted to an adjustable carb if you are not a fan of mtronic.

Do you change elevation much day to day?

Of course it’s easy to tune for elevations, but Mtronic is nice in an that it takes away another chore, I Range up to 2000ft between days.

I (and you probably) have plenty of other saws if I feel like adjusting carbs.

If you haven't had the chance, get your mitts on a SCarr ported 395. Ah-maize-ing.
The 94/95's oil like a hoss, are built like tanks, and easily handle a 50" bar and can mill like no other (except the 3120/880). I prefer the outboard clutch when on the mill BUT, that front chain tensioner sucks. Someone needs to get on a custom fix...

Never ran either but I really like outboard clutches and how many times does a guy honestly tighten a chain throughout the day? When I was logging for a living maybe 2-3 times! While not as
" convenient " it's really not a big deal.

I think Stihl when Stihl upgraded the 660 and released the 661 they made some clever good upgrades but forgot to put tanky toughness into it, 90cc saws don't just need powa, they need to be tough and resist a pounding.

Thousands apparently John.
myself maybe once or twice a day.
But all the young guy's must wear the tensioner and bar nuts out.
They need to just pack a cordless impact in the woods with them.
