So my lil Creamsicle is as assembled as I can make it today. I'm missing a half dozen more parts including a coil so I wasn't able to fire it up. I put it together 100% bone stock for now, just to get a feel for it as designed. Compression test yielded a whisker over 150psi. Happy with that.

Here's the pics: old cylinder, pretty confident it is salvageableIMG_20181216_095941876.jpg

So I've been puttering with this 024 and chasing my tail a bit concerning an issue of fuel supply not being able to keep up with demand. Runs ok on initial startup but goes lean rather quickly.

So, after pressure and vac testing the saw and finding that to be good to go, I started trying different things to narrow down the cause. Firstly, all new OEM fuel and impulse line. So I pulled the carb and verified impulse at the fitting with the carb and then old buddy Dan reminded me that I was supposed to drill the fuel line hole in the tank to 7/16" to properly fit the new OEM fuel line. I thought bingo, problem solved! So I do that, and still the thing goes lean after initial startup. What the hell.... So I pull and disassemble the carb for the fourth time, looking for any little smoking gun I may have missed and have a head slapping moment.... I'll post a pic of what I found and see how many of you pick up on it. I know it's a lesson I won't soon forget... You guys already in the know, don't comment yet. I'm gonna bet I'm the biggest idiot in the room and everybody will catch it right off the bat! Lol!IMG-20190101-WA0025.jpeg

Ok so the problem was that there should be little flapper check valves in the triangular cutouts in the pump diaphragm. Without them, there is nothing to keep the fuel moving in the right direction, and incidently, nothing to keep it from going the wrong direction. Essentially, the carb would draw enough fuel to run OK with the choke applied, but once the choke was switched off, the pump diaphragm would basically just be juggling fuel wherever as opposed to drawing it from the tank and pushing it through the metering valve. Basically all pumping action would pretty much cease.

No idea how or why those flapper valves are absent from the diaphragm, the carb is exactly is it was when I rescued the saw from the dealers junk pile. I can't think of any other time I've seen a pump diaphragm absent those flapper valves.

So, I await the arrival of a carb kit and then I'm certain my little 024 will run like it should. :)

Maybe the flaps get sucked so the carb flows more fuel and doesn't lean out and pass air?

Those flappers are essential to the pumping of the fuel from the tank to the metering side of the carb. They are basically a one way check valve. When the diaphragm moves up fuel is drawn into the pump diaphragm pocket. When it move down, it pushes that fuel into the metering valve cup. Those flappers keep the fuel moving in the right direction.

Borrowing a diagram Dan posted in another thread awhile back. The top section above the Venturi is the pump side. You can see the flapper valves represented at the fuel inlet and metering valve. B29CF3A4-94A3-467E-BC6C-3F6E18AD8FDE.jpeg
