So I decided to rescue this little 024 AV from the junk pile at my local dealer's shop. That's right, this is my first Stihl! (What's the world coming to!!) Lol!! Just kidding around...

Anyway, it's mostly complete, very dirty and probably needs an overhaul. I haven't yet even pulled the muffler to have a look at the piston. I hope the cylinder is salvageable as I hear Stihl cylinder kits are pricey. I paid $50 for it which I don't think is too bad for a mostly complete builder. I chose this little Stihl as it seems like the most direct and period correct competitor to the Husky 242 I recently brought back to life from the same junk pile. Also, I've been a little bit tickled by the small pro saws lately. I just missed a very clean looking Husky 234 SE for sale on FB for 75 bucks! :(

But enough about the Huskies for now. I just wanted to show you guys the next little bugger to be brought back to life on the bench. I don't plan on starting this build for a few months. Going to be busy with wood, vacations and deer hunting season before saw shop time resumes. Until then I might grab a part here and there that I know it needs of something comes up. But I won't be actively pursuing anything really.

So without further adue, here it is. Looks like it will clean up pretty good. :)IMG_20180504_155148736.jpg IMG_20180504_155143699.jpg IMG_20180504_155138928.jpg IMG_20180504_155132036.jpg

I couldn't resist....I pulled the muffler to have a look at the piston and it is scored. But, it's not scored as bad as most I have seen and successfully restored their accompanying cylinders! So it's fairly likely that this cylinder will be salvageable. Found that the coil has been swiped, so I'll need a coil eventually.

Dang, this muffler is going to be EASY to open up!

It's hard to tell by the pics, but look at pic 1. The choke lever mount on the right side, is it cracked.
Here is a pic of my 024 handle. Mines cracked all the way thru. The dark line is the crack.

Well it's about time Joe! Looks like I'll build one right along with you! Stopped at Ted's aka @big t double shop this morning before I headed back to Pittsbrugh. Was looking to snag some parts off of this saw. Ended up taking the whole thing for the price of a cheap case of beer! Lol! Dead saw salvage coming up!

Buddy just bought one with a 20” bar at a yard sale for $70... it was stored without fuel and has a ton of compression. We’re gonna fuel it up and see what happens!
We dumped some mix directly in the carb and it fired right up... seems to run good, but my MMWS 242xp is a much stronger runner. :)

I have a couple videos, but my YouTube app won’t work anymore...

So the fix for this would be a complete fuel tank?

Take a heat gun to that crack, should seal it up...

I didn't do any grinding at all on my 242, didn't even delete the gasket. Being that cylinders are getting so hard to come by I just wanted to play a little more conservative with it. Only things I did were muffler mod and a little timing advance. I'll do the same with this 024

I still think the 242 will be stronger, but the 024 is a decent little saw, as well.

Yup. Soldering iron. It's like tig welding, use a piece of an old tank for filler wire.

Let me know if you need help. Just pm me for my cell.
Mine is torn down on the bench, for a new fuel line and general cleaning.
I might have to send you a pm when I try to fix that crack, for advice.

Many incorrect parts on the OP Saw.

@PA Dan has correct clutch cover and fuel/oil caps.

Recoils? Never seen an American 024.

What's the SN on saws?
Just got home. I'll go get the serial from it and post it up. Are there any specific pics you would like me to get and post? Thanks for the heads-up on incorrect parts Doc, I really don't have much of an idea what I'm looking at with these Stihls yet. This will help me compile my list of parts to look for :)
