Check the cylinder and piston for scoring, also if you have an air leak somewhere. Are you sure your valve is leaking, did you verify it through the leakage test at your dealer? Maybe try a new solenoid valve.

If all fails, you can try to update to the newer control unit version. Therefore use the m-tronic update kit (1144 007 1801) including the orange pickup body, the white solenoid valve and the control unit with m-tronic v.3.

But try the easy inexpensive things first.

I vacuum and pressure tested saw at time of piston change I did and as we'll as when it started acting up again when this issue started. It pulled no codes at dealer were buddy works saw only acted up and wouldn't start hot other then that ran fine. You can see it start to weep a tad of fuel when hot. It has been a pain in arse to figure it out. New selenoid is on way.

I was talking of the leakage test especially for the solenoid valve on the m-tronic carburetor. If that is performed you would know 100% if it`s leaking or not. Anyway, see what it does with a new valve.

@Cracker Boy
Did it flood when the saw was shut off?
Cause the solenoid is always opened when the saw is shut off and problems with hot saw flooding are most of the time solved by a new repair kit for the carb.

I thought the calibration procedure was related to the ECM version, not solenoid color?

the white solenoid only works with the new ECM on the MS 661.
Old solenoid and new ECM shuts the saw off while calibrating.

Old solenoid and new ECM shuts the saw off while calibrating.

It's the Coil/Control module that determines if you do a "reset" (90 choke, 60 idle, 5 cuts), OR "calibration" (~40sec choke, hold WOT til saw screams, then let off throttle turn off saw and restart). NOT the solenoid color.

Specifically on 661 Stihl has told me several times now (I called in to see if I would get the same info) that,

Stihl says - Ver 3 coil "4702" "4703" "4704" = CALIBRATION - and only works with white + orange fuel filter.

That said - I bought a Ver 3 "4702" coil when they first came out. Before any of the above was even known about!! and I ran it with a black solenoid and did the calibration and it worked fine. Although admit tingly I didn't run it a lot and it was the saw that had the problems in extreme sub zero cold. So looking back now maybe the saw wouldn't of had a problem at sub zero if I had the recommend white solenoid and orange filter in. Other than that it seemed to run just fine.

Stihl says - Ver 2 coil "4701A" = RESET - and only works with black solenoid.

Ver 1 coil "4700C" 4700D 4700E = RESET - only works with black solenoid. (If I had one of these I would just get the kit..see below).
----------------------------------------

In any case, IF your having problems related to a coil or solenoid.

Just order the 661 kit!!! You get a coil, white solenoid, and orange fuel filter for like $50. 1144-007-1801

Why is it that I have never had trouble like this with my Stihl MS660 Mag or my vintage 064? Is high-tech going the right direction? I have to wonder.

Agree what's weird is certain model m tronic saws like 261 and 241 hardly ever here of this issue it's the 362 and 661 seems to be most problematic

You can use a white solenoid and the orange fuel filter on every ms 261/ms 362. (1140 007 1802 is the part # for the set)
On the MS 661/462 you have to use the right ECM to switch to the white solenoids.
I tried using a black solenoid on MS 462 with mtronic V3 ECM and the saw would run without any problems but during calibration the saw was shut off and the SDS software told em the calibration was not completed.

I cut up a 40" maple and a couple of 30" with v.3 and a black solenoid. It seems to work fine for me. You figure if it would have had problems, they would have reared their ugly head by now. Not a oroblook em, but I did have a problem with the saw sitting for a couple of months. Pulled it over about 20 times to nothing. Pulled spark plug, it was dry. Primed her, good to go. I'm blaming that on the leftover Red Armor fuel I had in there.;)
