You know that's how I do it. It all starts by buying an air filter or a bar because it was a good deal, next thing you know you end up with the saw, it's all part of the plan.
That being said I've never paid 300 for an air filter, but that's probably what a "good" Stihl filter would cost , at least bolts are cheap.
