461 vs 460?

I've run both a stihl ms461 and a 460,and i cant tell much difference between the two,however i have now met two seperate arborists who swear the 461 is gutless compared to the 460.
Is this just the usual "old is better than new"argument,or is there some truth in it?

The 460 and 660 are legends. The 461 and 661 are seen by some as the new kids trying to kick the old guy off the throne.

I have both, and I can't honestly tell there's much different between either myself. They both haul the mail pretty well so to speak. But both sit idly by as my goto saw is my emu legged 372.

I like my 460's better....they have more of a logger's saw feel. 461's feel like something some city slacker would grab and brag about. haha But both saws are good saws. At the shop we all fight on who get's to service a 461 or 661 for a customer. haha

A 461 is basically a 460 with a different jug..and a few other things that dont matter much

A 661 is a totally different saw than a 660.

No *s-word, tons of the parts interchange between both models. There's no discernible difference in feel between each.

I've noticed that many saw opinions are generated from ignorance. You can collect ten saws of the same model from random owners across the country and they are not all going to run the exact same. One of the bunch will likely be a ringer and very impressive, while another in the bunch won't peel pudding skin.
The one that isn't healthy is likely the one some person is going to tell the whole world about.

I love em both, 046 and the 461. Both are ported and ported way different

the 461 has only had 3 tanks of fuel through it, do they improve with run time?
also, would a dual port muffler give it more berries?
I only say this because my tired old 064 leaves the 461 for dead.

Yes.....about 7-8 tanks for mine.

I think the quad transfers give the 461 a slight advantage over the 046/460 personally.

Skip Sail..Hope you dont mind me adding to your initial posts line of inquiry ...but as the 461 is a 2 mix engine without M-tronic and the 46o .. I would "think" ?.. is not a 2 mix engine but old school , could there be a some difference right there.

Well, other than I don't have any 044s, 440s, or 460s anymore: just 461s.

Yes sir any were from 6-15 tanks I promise you that saw will come alive!!!!.... If not something is wrong with it.... Until mine broke in fully I literally thought, why did I buy this saw it ain't all that much better than my ms362.....I could tell as soon as I pulled the cord to start her one day that she was properly broke in..... I am not a weak guy at all, but I gaurentee ya if someone don't pull the cord hard and brisk , they will hurt their shoulder trying lol....but in all seriousness it seemed to have full compression and cut like a champ around 6-10 tanks with me....

Other than a 461 feels smoother..i agree.

I think its the best saw stihl has on the rug right now.
