What’s the advantage and how much harder is it to pull than 3/8?
If I get a 42” bar, I think my stock 395xp would pull 3/8”, definitely skip and likely full comp. But I’m not sure if it would pull .404 on that length.

Utah, unfortunately.....
My stock 395XP has no problem pulling 135dl (42") of 3/8 063. I haven't tried 404 at that length, yet.

Don't know how much of a difference there is performance wise between a 395 and a 2100 but I run a 42" with .404 skip often on my 2100. It pulls it great. Never ran any other hooskies in that size range.

advantage - stays sharper longer. can take more abuse. 395 will pull it no problem.

stock 395 pulling 36" .404 full comp.

If I get a 42” bar it would be to maximize my mill and slab a 36” tree, of which I know of only one project as of now.
I wouldn’t be felling any trees larger than my 32” bar would handle, so bucking isn’t even necessary. But it could be fun.

Just curious since I see a deal on a 404 bar.

3/8 is 'generally' smoother but .404 has some advantages putting speed aside. Them big cutters have a lot of meat and can be sharpened many times. It can be very cost effective chain that cuts longer per sharpening and put more wood on the ground per loop.

All my large saws ,above 100 cc use .404 chain .Stihl 084,McCulloch Sp 105,2 Mac Sp 125's .Homelite 2100 S .It's the size they came with ,no sense in changing it no more than they get used . I doubt 3/8" chain would be any faster all things considered .
