Got a tree guy who's looking at ordering me a 880 kit to make for him. He loves what I did with his 660 and 200t. But he has a question I can only assume. With an 880 with .404 chain. Full comp ok on a 60 inch bar? He's buying this for a job he has lined up next spring. And I'm thinking he should be alright. Am I wrong?

A stock 880 will struggle with a 60” and 0.375 ………….

I am not qualified to say for sure but I’d go skip. If for no other reason than less to sharpen. Generally skip is recommended over 36”.
I second this notion!
Full skip!

Full complement 36" 3/8" in hardwood has chip clearing issues.
It works as long as chain speed is kept high.

No idea about the 880.

I honestly have no clue. I just know my 660 with a 36 runs a full comp .375 like a knife threw butter. So all I can do is extrapolate that to a next size up power head and assume 24 inches would be cutting it close to its limits. Or it would be....ok at best. That's why I'm here. Lol. Hoping somebody has some experience that I can learn from.

Yeah. It's all hardwood here. I think it's some monster cotton wood he has to get rid of.

On a bone stock 880 Id say full comp works to 36"depending on what you like...and I've run skip on a 36 in some wood it felt better..it makes a difference if you like your chain hungry, might like skip sooner. On my Ported 880 I'm running a 41"bar and RS skip, with the gauges low it'll still pull reliably while dogged in..it'll pull a full comp but I like the forgiveness of skip..I can go nuts boring and it just throws chips..the real truth on this question, there's not any one right answer to cover everyone or every situation, too many variables and cutting styles..

Depends on the user and his experience matching points up on a stump. Can it do it ? Yes...if he's careful and works with the saw and not against it.

Assuming it's a big stump he's working down. I've seen 60s that flopped around and some good Cannons that held rigid making cuts somewhat easier.

In short....it.depends

On a lot of variables...

The 60” .404 cannon I have flops around for sure. To the point I wouldn’t be comfortable starting a felling cut with it under any circumstance - the handful of times I have used it on standing trees, I started each and every kerf with a 70 or 90cc saw.
