Well, since ya asked.................

There's actually a couple more besides the decal cutouts. The starter housing has the additional ribs that were introduced around 02-03. I think Huskyboy's starter pic shows the earlier housing. And, the 2 top cover decals should be all yellow.

But that is a stellar job you did there Matt. Outstanding.

Yes the starter housings are different, but I don't think I know what you mean as far as the top cover goes. This here is a 371xp bought new in 1999 and has only had minor parts replaced like sprocket, plugs etc.

The decals are exactly like the reproductions. The engine info one is a bit yellowish around the edges, but only due to age. Is this what you're talking about?

Yeah, there's a lot of decals. Yours makes sense if it was a 99, because those are the decals I have on a 2000 372. Other 371's I have are all yellow in the decals. I'll get a pic or two up tomorrow. I have an NOS 371 top cover I'm looking at right now in addition to what's on the saws. There was also a version where the large decal had a thicker white band and the smaller one was mostly white with a 3/8" yellow bar on the left.

Up to this point, these decals were pretty much yellow on all the saws. The smaller decal used to be an ANSI thing, but now it's an emission decal. How's this for regulations: That emission decal "must" be on the saw, but you can't buy it and replacment top covers don't have one there; it's left blank. Typical, isn't it?

You're the man to ask was the oem single ring 371 piston the same overall height as a oem double ring 372

I really don't know, cause I never measured them. I have the single ring pistons in stock, so I can check tomorrow. But who knows if they changed the piston ftom 20 years ago.

The pistons should be the same dimensions, as the same rod/head is used. It'll be interesting to see if Bob can find a difference nonetheless.

And regarding decals; it seems as though they were changed quite a bit in small ways. Just adds to the confusion.

And would you happen to have or know where some NOS orange air filter clips are Bob?

Well, there's 2 on this cover on my desk...............:) 'Course I'm hanging on to to this one.

I'll have a look in one of the mystery boxes tomorrow. Used OK?

Don't blame you for holding onto them; I would too!
If they're mint I could do used. No big deal if they aren't, I'll have to wait. I'm sure some will pop up somewhere.

Thanks don't worry about it i got some am pistons in that were odd the single ring is several thousands shorter on the top and bottom than the double ring and quite a bit lighter it's not important just odd lol thanks anyway.20170301_151333.jpg 20170301_151308.jpg

Okay, way to make me feel bad now!

But yes, I'm well aware haha. I couldn't find any, so if anyone knows where some really really nice ones are, or NOS, feel free to let me know.

To be honest tho, this saw was very low hour, and was a pretty late model one. It had the gray clips, which to the best of my knowledge were original. I do like the orange clips a lot better, but some 371's could've slipped through with grays. This saw was 1 of 3 bought by family members from the same dealership within the same month in a small town in NH. We have 2 as if now, and the third is owned by my uncle. It'd be sweet to get all three back together. They could potientially have very close serial numbers as well.

There's also one more thing that isn't "correct" here. If anyone picks it out I'd be impressed.
I've also noticed that your top cover has a "felling mark" on it where the early 371's do not, not sure if the late 371's had the mark or not.....IMG_2356.JPG 00X0X_16Ueen7ov71_1200x900.jpg

I've seen the two different styles on the 371's I believe, but will check later with some of the saws. I think the later 371's had most everything a 372xp had in terms of what we're discussing here.

And that's a very nice looking 371. Can't imagine it had much use

The 371 I posted the pic of was on c-list near me a while back, came close to buying it, got lucky finding the one I did, it was very close by and from a good friend of mine, oh....and the price was much better than the saw I posted the pic of....:).

I picked up this 1997 371xp in really dirty condition but after a thorough clean realised it was quite good. The muffler was cracked completely so I fitted a new OEM muffler. All I have to do now is fit a new chain brake handle and a new air filter. I’ve always wanted the 371!
Anyone no a good trick to getting the top plastics to shine again.

You won't get the shine back but Vaseline will help bring back the color a little. Spread it on and leave it overnight then wipe off.
