Seems odd that someone would take out the stuffers...o_O. How's it run without them?
This rather sorry example of a 357 has a 47mm AM top and piston with what i suspect is a 359 crank to get the 15mm crank bearing. Putting in a 359 crank is the only logical conclusion I can come up with as like you say ,it makes no cense to split the saw and not put stuffers in to keep a 357 running like a 357 !! This is a pile of Pooo :( :D

Never had one 357 crank where I can read of the numbers, those stuffers normally rub of those numbers.
I always love to read of those numbers because the crank is stamped when it was made also

Just stumbled across this on my youtube page. Same saw, bone stock when I got it this past december. Cutting MUCH smaller wood...what a difference! Not trying to derail the conversation I'm just still giggling about how good it runs now.

Before:

After: I know I already posted this, but figured I'd make it easier for comparative viewing for those interested.

Ok.......LOL

What about Carbs. This is all of them I seen listed.
EPA
175
191 XPG
199

NonEPA
174
190 XPG
198
Anyone know if these are all the same size?
Might open up the options on finding one if someone needs one.

My saw has a 199 on it if I remember correctly. What's the difference between EPA and non EPA carbs? Jet limiters?

I investigated the crankshaft at one point and came to the conclusion that the 357/359 crankshafts are the same with the only difference of stuffer cups.

Great info thanks! Ever tried stuffers in a 359? With all that transfer area I bet it would run pretty well. Of course there's the never ending question of which is better for the saws performance: crank case volume or velocity/pressure.

I believe so.
@Tor R would be the one to ask. Hopefully he'll pop back in here.
I think the EPA ones had accelerator pumps in them too.
I belive only EPA carbs had accelerator pump.
190&191 was ment for XPG's with heat element, while 198&199 was ment for XP/XPG versions. (All my 357 XPG's came with 199 carb)
Same goes with 174&175.

Since 191&199 had different throttle shaft my bet is because it drift the acc pump.

I would like to know where part # 537044701 & 503944701(EPA) is placed in the carb

If we figure out this I am pretty sure we will know the whole picture of the difference between 198 vs 199

What part is 503944701? Other than jets and throttle linkage that's the only other EPA part. And of course the limiters are EPA....grumble grumble:mad:

you see that part 3 step over part numbers for the limiters ;) it's the only part inside who is EPA.
One of those days I'll think I gone order it from Husky lol

It would be much easier to put a 359 top end on a 357 to find out.

I'm not so sure it's meant for performance as much as it is for fuel consumption and easier starting. The stronger the case vacuum is the faster it pulls fuel while choked.

Really good info piling in here guys....

I too have wondered about the 174/175 and 198/199 carbs.

My 357 made in '05 has the 199 carb. My 359 was made in '02 but did not have the carb when I bought it for a project. I snagged a good deal on a 175 with intake elbow, ignition and choke switch and it runs well on my 359 that has a base gasket delete as the only mod. I wish I could say I pulled the 199 carb out of the 57 and compared it side x side with the 175 that went into the 359, but alas, I did not. I was excited to get that 359 back together. About all I can say is that the externals look just like the 199, everything hooks up the same, and the 175 has the accelerator pump.

We never did get a vid of my 57 after my little port job yesterday! LOL! Not much point really though as it seems to run virtually identical to Josh's above. :D

Disclaimer: I'm still at the novice level of learning finer points of the science concerning how these wing-dingers work..

Having said that, is it possible that easier starting is an unintended good side effect of the stuffers/less case volume?? In my mind, less case volume should increase intake and transfer velocity, which is generally a good thing for performance until the point is reached that less case volume is taken too far.... I could be off base in my thinking...

FWIW, I haven't noticed that my 357 starts easier than my 359 to any noticeable degree....

But I DID notice yesterday that after I did my porting, the 357 started cold easier than it ever has since I bought it new...

Tor, that looks like what I've seen referred to as the check valve to me...

And I think you are right that the throttle shaft difference is due to accel pump/no accel pump
