There was a thread here from before I joined without a lot of info. It seems like a straightforward concept so I had planned on building this with a few pics and a vid and reporting on the results. I started into it this morning and thought i should share what i found and gather thoughts. I probably won't have this finished until sometime next week so if all you want to know is "how's it run" come back later. Also, I get a little long winded on these so bear with me.

My local husky shop guy did a 353 with these. I ran it and I wasn't impressed. He likes his aftermarket junk though so i didn't get into details. I just had him order me a set.

The first thing that caught my attention was the different size counterweights. I'm using this crank.

The little snouts near the counterweight didn't match up real good with the plastic inserts on the cups either.

I hand sanded the inside of the FW side to 18mm. I tapped it on with a dead blow. The cutout for the counterweight is perfect. It fit great and cleared the snout by a lot. Maybe too much. Do you think I should make a bushing to keep it from walking out and rubbing on the case?

Same thing with the ID on the PTO side. It fit great, but I needed to take some of the plastic extension off so that the bearing would seat all the way down on the step on the crank. Uh oh...

I took the metal down so it sits flush with the step.

It is held in place by the outside lip, but it can spin slightly in the cutout for the counterweight.

It doesn't move that much, as the short side of the weight cutout is a pretty good fit. Maybe 5° of rotation. When I press the bearing on it may tighten up too. I kept the little plastic ring and could stick it in between the cup and crank but I'm not excited about a hunk of loose plastic in the bottom end.

Thoughts?

The plastic is molded to the metal cup. It only came off because I sanded it down. I could re-use it, but if I'm going to take up clearance I'd rather use something else I think. When I mentioned using it on the PTO side I meant like this.

I'm leery of filling in between the counterweights and cup because I don't want to screw up the balance of the crank.

I'm not thinking a little filler would be a problem with balance, think of the weight your adding with the stuffers, I wonder how perfect it will be just with them. Then people use all sorts of AM pistons as well as mismatched pistons to the crank, heck I have one someone cut half the top off of, and it's not even the correct piston for the saw :D.

Single cylinder engines can't be 100% balanced without a balance shaft. Instead they are balanced to 50-60%, so don't worry about adding some bob weight, it won't really make a noticeable difference.

Have you done this already? I swear I looked around the internet pretty good. Just saw the 353 thread here.

Haven't done it but been threatening to since I saw that thread, keep forgetting to add the stuffers when I put in a misc parts order.
Can't remember the original thread but I saved some notes in my 346 porting file, says "...fitted Husqvarna 345FR/545FX crankshaft cups (part no. 537 15 85-01) on crankshaft, clutch side one needed some light modification."

Seems to me it was someone somewhere in Europe...
