Currently rebuilding a 288xp and I decided to do some port work. Aside from the usual widening and squaring the ports off, can someone get me started in the right direction. I'm not looking to build the baddest saw ever built but something decently stronger than stock would be nice. I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject and I'm not finding the information I'm looking for.

Here's a few ideas I have already. Decking the cylinder and making a popup. Maybe raise the exhaust a little, smooth out the lowers. Or Decking and cutting the squish band, maybe a little timing advance. Timing advance is something I cant find any info on for this saw. What kind of work does this saw respond well too?

Any help is appreciated.

This was meant only for play time so exhuast got raised a bunch, ex port width is “maxed out”...intake is funny on 2 series huskys, widened and increased intake duration a bunch as well.

Wrong answer. I dont need someone else to do the port work. I am aware of rattler saws.

I am using a meteor piston. This saw will be put up for sale.
I was joking. I wasn't aware that you were an expert on port work based on your original question.

Aside from the DIY part of it, it's actually more cost effective to have a seasoned guy do it. Even more so if you'll be selling it "ported"

Not an expert. Sorry about not laughing. The internet has taught me people will bring up all kinds of information not about the question asked. I tend to shut that kind of talk down quick.

How is it more cost effective to pay someone to do the port work than to do it myself? I'm also interested in the learning aspect. Can't put a price on that.

See look whats happening now, we've gotten away from the question I asked.

Every porter started somewhere. I’ve done some porting already and have had good success. Looking for first hand experience. I’m not sure how long this chainsaw fad will last for me but for now I’ll probably only be rebuilding and porting saws. Plain ol rebuilds bores me now.

I finally got the timing wheel on the 288. Using a hyway jug and meteor piston. I will say the hyway jug looks pretty good. Just need to smooth a few things out. Intake duration is pretty short compared to the exhaust. These numbers are without a base gasket. Squish is at .030".

BD: 19

I'm thinking of taking .030" off the base and making a .020" pop up. From there play with final squish as needed, and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Whats your guys take on this?

My take is that your numbers are off.
