I put this up for sale over on AS as a project saw and quickly took it down when I noticed some epoxy on it. So I decided I'd go through it myself. the epoxy I noticed turned out to be nothing but after cleaning it up I found some more and even worse when I pulled the bar plate off I saw that one of the studs had been replaced with a screw in stud and a heli coil. It's in there tight and not leaking oil but I just don't like it so at some point I'll be changeing out that side of the crankcase. I may pull the heli coil out and put a threaded insert in there or drill it out and press a sleeve in the hole so I can use the oem stud. For now it's going to stay the way it is. You can see in the pic how the coil s sticking out and I'm going to cut that portion of the coil off. Below the stud where the bumper goes there is a little epoxy that's been painted over.

Here's what I've got done on the cylinder so far. The final numbers should be around, EX 100, IN 78, TR 120, squish 20. A little sanding and bevels and it should be ready to go.

and the muffler mod. I just opened it up to the seam, folded the metal back and welded a piece of pipe over the hole to shield the chain brake.

Got some stronger glasses and good news is I can see better. The bad is I can see a crack in the flywheel side of the crankcase. This crank case is trash so I'm going to use the other crankcase I have and someone from AS is going to send me one I can use on the other saw. Anyway, I put the cylinder on and should have it all finished up this weekend.

If you’re cutting it in the lathe anyways why not cut it to use a gasket. I know a lot of guys use/trust no gasket but if I have to choose between gasket or no gasket I’m using a gasket every time.

No real reason, I just never use a gasket if I don't have to.

I’m not trying to question you Ronie as much as I’m just making a suggestion. Most saws I build go into the log woods and I learned some time ago that I just do not trust sealant alone. I ate a couple of top ends for it.

Thanks for the suggestion, so far I haven't had any failures.

I’m with you Brett.

As long as I have enough base thickness, I go gasket every time.

It’s nice to be able to pull a jug when necessary without dealing with a mess, plus the factory doesn’t do anything for no reason.

I agree, it is nice to pull a jug and not have to clean the sealant off. What I hate is when the gasket is baked on, hard and you have to get a razor out to scrape it off.

Hi. I always use gasket, and it is good for vibrations and seals good.

I didn't get it put back together this past weekend because it failed a vacuum test and needs seals. I've got the seals but the oil pump o ring needs replaced and the one I had on order got lost so I ordered a couple today.
