Finally got around to getting pics of my 262 project. I got it in parts form from @Landmark. I mainly wanted the tank assembly, top covers carb and little bits. The crank halves had quite a bit of water damage. I found cheaper amd easier to get a complete case with bearings which I got from @bplust with some missing hardware I needed.

I got a nice mahle "b" cylinder and "b" meteor piston. Found a NOS muffler and heatshield. Rebuilt the hda 120 carb, added new fuel lines, plug wire, coil wire, bar plate, chain tensioner, flywheel shield, decals and some other little bits here and there. Have a mag clutch cover coming. It will get an 3\8 18" GB protop bar once I replace the tip. Hopefully I can get her to fire this week. The colors are a little washes out in the pics...

Thanks. This is gonna stay stock for a while and be "my" saw to keep with me. My dad has the rest and uses the 6100 for everything. After running that and the 120si I don't expect to be blown away with this saw but am excited nonetheless. I sold the 120si mainly because I needed the money and parts are so scarce for it that was afraid to use it a lot. This saw will fill that void.

Nice saw you have built. I am glad the parts went to such a great project. You will enjoy running it and they are very responsive to mm and porting if you ever desire.

Thanks! This has been a fun project. I used a combo of heat gun, sanding and pliers to fix the melting/warping of the cylinder cover. It's not perfect but looks a lot better now. I also updated clutch drum and oiler worm gear to the newer style so it won't oil while idling.

Beautiful build!!!
Is it one 1995 model?

Thank you! To be honest Im not sure of the year, ill post a pic of the id tag later. This saw is a mutt of sorts. I know the original crankcase only had a place for the plastic chain catcher which would put it earlier in the life cycle? As would the "compartment" tank and brass oiler gear (which i upgraded to the newer style drum and worm gear). The complete case I got came from a 257 and has the two slots for the tabs on the plastic clutch cover (I switched the id tags). The mag clutch cover also will change it some as it came with the plastic one. I just prefer a mag cover.

94 or older had mount for plastic chain cover only, 95 had for them both and I think 96 only had mount for metal chain cover.
Very nice rebuild you've done.

There is a service bulletin that explains the 2 side covers. There's some overlap because the change to the case occurred 2 years before the change over to the metal cover. I'll list all of the serial number changes for the different models. The problem with the fit up is the metal cover has a guide pin that has to fit into a recess on the case and only the new cases have it. I suppose it wouldn't be a big deal to just grind it off if need be. If you have a G model you have to use the cover plate for the wires or you'll get some arching to the metal cover. Plastic side covers are NLA; metal still available.

Case changes:

262- 1994, wk 14, 0342
257- 1994 wk 15, 0001
254-1994 wk 15, 0001

New brakes supplied:

254G-1996 wk 10, 0001
254-1996 wk 13, 0001
257-1996 wk 13, 0251
262- 1996 wk 9, 0401
262G-1996 wk 11, 0410

Yes. I briefly had a 261 with the mag cover . I was going to use it on my earlier 262. It would have been a shame to mutilate a near perfect piece to make it work so I left it with the 261 when I passed it on.

Thanks for the info @Spike60 that is helpful to know. I will decide what to do with the cover later. I have the plastic cover but it needs a new brake band. Im sure I would have no problem selling or trading the mag clutch cover if I dont want to use it. I plan on putting some the extra bits on the trading post when Im all done anyways.

Got her to start today. First question: is there a throttle lock on this? Does the choke set it? I need to download an owners manual.

While getting it to idle I lost the clutch and buggered up the spring lol. Stopped at the local dealer and he had a spring and a tip for my GB bar so i got that too. Won't run it again until bar and chain are on.

I primed the oil pump during assembly and it works and seemed to oil good for the short time i ran it.

Got the mag clutch cover. My crankcase has the two slots for plastic cover but also had a recess for the pin on the mag cover so it fits fine. I'll get a new decal later.

Heres some pics with cover and a new accessory:

I do have an outside spike and it appears to be the correct part number. The spikes line up if u lay them on top of each other. However, once you put the spike on the bar studs it doesn't line up quite right. Neither are bent. Is this normal? Here's a topples pic:
