OK fellas! My new Performance Saw Supply piston arrived from Lil Red Barn today. At first glance it looks very close to the OEM piston because well, it IS VERY close to OEM dimensionally speaking. It is windowed and seems to be of pretty darn good quality. The only obvious difference at a glance is that it does not have the offset intake skirt but strangely enough the intake skirts seem to be the same width, I checked twice. I took a few pics and will post dimensions as best I could measure with my caliper in the next post.... OK, so I will refer to the Performance Saw Supply piston as "PSS", here is how the measurements shook out. The only measurement that may have a little error is wrist pin to crown as the crown is slightly domed, I tried as best I could to measure both pistons in the exact same way, the wrist pin bore being recessed made that a little tricky but I think I got it pretty close.

So here it is:

Overall height: OEM- 1.344" (34.13mm)--------PSS- 1.338" (33.98mm)
Intake skirt width: OEM- 1.145" (29.08mm)-------PSS- Same
Exhaust skirt width: OEM- 1.150" (29.21mm)-------PSS- 1.145" (29.08mm)
Pin to crown: OEM- .550" (13.97mm)-------PSS- .545" (13.84mm)

So, it seems there is about .005"-.006" (.12mm-.15mm) difference in overall height with the PSS piston being shorter and that difference seems to be at the pin to crown measurement. This is pretty darned close if you ask me. This MAY be a good viable 242 piston being so very close to OEM dimensions. Looks like a BG delete should easily make up the difference and then some for added compression over stock configuration with the gasket in place. :)

What do you guys think?

To accurately measure top of pin to top of piston, install the pin half way and use the depth measuring feature on your calipers to take the measurement from top edge of piston to top of pin. If your piston is domed and your squish band is flat you need to be careful measuring squish. You could always glue sandpaper to your domed piston and sand the squish band to match your piston profile.

It seems ever so slightly domed. Thanks for the tip CJ, I didn't think of that. I think I got it pretty close though as the pin to crown measurements pretty much agree with overall height difference

Just to let you guys know I haven't abandoned this project, just been sidetracked by a flurry of vehicle repairs that tapped my extra spending money and just got home from a ten day family camping trip in the Adirondacks. I have a couple more repairs to make on my winter truck and then I'll be resuming this project. I'll be ordering my gasket set, flywheel side crank bearing and seal as well as some other odds and ends soon....Plus I might be looking for a couple of misc used parts as well.

Since we last chatted here, have any of you other 242 guys tried a PSS piston yet?

Hey another thing to always service on these is the prefilter that is in the case. you never hear much about them.

you mind taking some pics and showing everyone?

no one cleans them out. everyone i have ever seen needed to be cleaned...
David is correct, 95% of those 133-242-246 owners never clean the prefilter.

Wish I had taken picture of the prefilter to the 242 I bought on Sunday, the whole area around the prefilter was totally clogged, owner fix was to remove the winter plug though :D
