I am thinking about buying a 2159 that has a burned up top end. Plastic clamp strikes again. I was thinking of these options for a replacement:
1. OE 357 Xp

2. Hyway 359/357

3. Cross performance 359

I’m sure each has its advantages but is there one that is just better or outperforms the rest? Saw will be mostly for firewood. Thinking a muffler mod and some flywheel key thinning. Thanks for your input. Yes, I will get a metal clamp!

Of the choices you listed, I would go OEM 357 top end. Bolting them on as-is with no mods, the 357 will outperform all of them

Is there another good option I missed? (Not that I know much about this stuff)

Do not go with the cross!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought two of them and they flat out suck! The ports are ridiculously small and way off. I tried one just out of curiosity sake and it was pathetic. Total waste of time and money if you are going to bolt on and go. I'm going to have to do some serious research and do some major grinding before I can use them.

Best thing you can do is go oem and send it to @t4driller

I second this notion. With prices of oem kits nowadays it makes it worth while to use them. Might be cheaper then meteor actuslly. If you dont have a descent dealer to get parts off of im sure theres member or 2 that could get u what u need. [emoji16]

I have used a Hyway kit before for a 353 and liked it.

How does the Oem 357 top work without the stuffers?

Stock 359 with a basic muffler mod is one hell of a fire wood saw. I gotta believe that the 357 top end will just make it that much better. For the price of the kit it's a no brainer. Jmo...

My brother (Skidder) just received his Meteor 357 cylinder kit he got on sale from HL Supply for an excellent price..under $90 if I recall. I'm not sure if that price is still in effect. I checked it out and the quality seems to be very good. I have not used a Meteor cylinder but have used plenty of their pistons without any problems. I've heard others say the cylinders are very good as well. It would be my second choice after OEM for a cylinder.

Muffler modded and a BG delete 359 makes for an excellent all-round saw for sure. But the 357 is....well.....a 357! ;)

To be honest I ran a 359 for 10 yrs as my only saw, bought a 357 and ran it stock, barely any difference between the two, now the 357 is ported, different story;). While oem is a few bucks more, it is always worth it. Most guys who port saws get great deals, so if porting it is in the saws future, I would contact them and ask about cost for them to get the cylinder and port it, most will work with you on parts pricing.

I have a 2159 that came with a super cheap top end, have a thread here. Don't get one of those. Low compression, no power. Been doing a lot of research. I'm getting an OEM 357 top end, $5 more than the 359. Once I get it, I'm going to compare port locations and see what I can do with the cheapie. Then I might keep it for a spare or sell it for a few bucks to offset some of my loss.

IIRC, my research indicated OK without stuffers.
