Be very freaking careful.
There’s enough room to drill and tap these in.

There’s no extra room but there is enough.

I have filled a couple of holes for the top cover screws on my 288 with JB Marine.
Those that have drilled and tapped for a helicoil, did you risk a handheld drill or go to the trouble of setting up for plumb on a drill press? I'm thinking the travel limits on the drill press could be beneficial, but a tape-wrap on a drill bit is time proven too.

I've just used a cordless drill as I have a small drill press. I would say let your equipment be your guide.

What about just gluing an insert (press fit, or threaded) into a freshly drilled hole with JB instead of the extra step of tapping the epoxy? Would it work well? I'm not sure I want to buy an other tap for fixing one saw if I don't have to.
