For those that have played, what are the dimensions of the 084 rod? Length, big end diameter, width. I’m having some ideas. Has anyone heard of other cranks besides the 3120 that people used it on?

It has more stroke than any other Stihl saw. What’s your plans?

I have one somewhere. I’ll try to find it in my boxes of stuff to measure

They use an 084 rod on a stroked Husky 3120 crankshaft to make those 140 cc hot saws .That's about all I know about except the fact it's an expensive modification .

Without going into detail ,there's a little more to it than that .I made Cliff H enough of one special part designed by him to build about 6 .He had the idea I had the Monarch 10" EE toolmakers lathe plus the knowledge to use it

I’ve got some plans of my own. Granted it’s not the first time it’s been done. But I’d like to be able to run with them 3140’s

I was thinking about putting it on a 2100 crank but not stroked. It will get the wrist pin higher and maybe allow other piston options or 395 cylinder swaps or...

I found out the big end of 2100 and the 3120 are the same. I also just learned that you can fit the fancy stroked 3120 crank in a 2100 case. Seems like a good, “just because” reason.

It’ll be my Longrod VonHugendong 2100

So you’re the guy. Though lots of reading I remember special parts getting machined nearby.

Guilty as charged . I haven't seen or talked to Cliff or Rick in a couple of years .As I've said before if somebody puts a trust in me with special parts being an old submarine sailor I'm silent about it ,no offense meant .
Myself I've never delved into super hotties .Modified work saws maybe but not always .I'm not even certain if Cliff is still at it or not .I'm way too old and way too stingy to sink 5 grand in a super saw just to prove a point .

Alright, now for more fun questions. When pressing the crank together does anyone have tricks they want to share on getting alignment? I’ve talked with machinists and they all have similar ideas which mostly involve careful planning. A simple check I will do is check throw out mounted between centers.

I made a fixture to hold the two halves of a 066 crank in phase.

Probably the most simple is just to send it to Falicon in Florida .It's not cheap though . Cahoon remarked they once tried it with a 50 ton press and had no luck .
Having only the knowledge how a captive rod to piston was assembled that process used an induction heater to expand the pin end .A crankshaft as such I have no idea .
You might do a Google on alignment procedures on Harley cranks to get a rough idea noting that those are tapered pins .

I was planning induction and/or liquid nitrogen depending on how I reassemble. It kinda depends on the specs of the interference fit too, will the pin contract more with cold, how much the weights will expand with what temperature and not going too high before changing the structure. It’s all been done for hundreds of years, I just need to reread all my metallurgy books.
@Mastermind , I like the jig idea and considered it. Was yours precise or more used as a solid fixture when pressing?

I've been able to press two piece Stihl cranks apart and back together with ease. Never tried a Husky though.

Made from aluminum stock, with steel rods. Just wanted to see if it would work.

Since the aluminum isn' t too rigid, it can't be real precise. Won't mar the crank either though.

You can stroke the 084 /088 the problem is in the balancing.and Al Smith cliff is still building saws and so far they are the saws to beat I'm building a 088 and 090 160 cc saws right now

@EJ mcnamara I tried responding to you on Kevin’s site about the 2100 piston. Not sure which place you frequent more. I got some of these ideas when I saw you asking Ed a few years ago about stroking a 2100.
