044 chat the bed

I bought an older rebuilt 044 several years ago. Today it gave up the ghost.

The piston acts like the rod is broken or it is otherwise not connected to the crank, the piston will move freely in the cylinder, is not scored and looks good thru exhaust port. Seems these had bearing issues but I do not know if shot bearings would allow the piston to act like that (act disconnected)

As a better than average weekend mechanic (but not a real mechanic with specialized tools) is this something I can tackle on my own?

Ideas?

Sure you can. First thing you need to do is get it torn down and get some pics posted of the carnage.

I recommend giving up and shipping the saw to me, I will pay postage of course because I am a gentleman

Do I take off carb to take off manifold boot?

Can I leave handle on to remove cylinder?

Pull the top handle off. Even if you could get the cylinder off with it in place it would be way more of a PITA. Should be two bolts through the carb pull them and everything will come apart.

Before you tear that saw down, remove the starter cover and see if the flywheel has spun loose from the crankshaft.

Thank goodness, flywheel loose

Do I just tighten it up?.

Pull it off, check the key. If it all looks good put it back together and tighten it with an impact on the lowest setting.
