I bought an older rebuilt 044 several years ago. Today it gave up the ghost.

The piston acts like the rod is broken or it is otherwise not connected to the crank, the piston will move freely in the cylinder, is not scored and looks good thru exhaust port. Seems these had bearing issues but I do not know if shot bearings would allow the piston to act like that (act disconnected)

As a better than average weekend mechanic (but not a real mechanic with specialized tools) is this something I can tackle on my own?

Ideas?

This is the reason we're here, to help you get it up and running. Then we will have you hooked and the next thing you know you will have 50 saws. Let's see some pix and get the saw dust a flying again!!

Do I take off carb to take off manifold boot?

Can I leave handle on to remove cylinder?

Pull the top handle off. Even if you could get the cylinder off with it in place it would be way more of a PITA. Should be two bolts through the carb pull them and everything will come apart.
