Someone early on in MattG’s 044 build thread was wondering if the 042/048 top end would bolt to an 044. I’m sure if a person was to attempt this you would use the 048. I took pics of an 042 vs the 044 and was wondering if anyone thinks this would be worth a try. Been looking at photos of a 046 and 048 piston very similar in photos. Guess I need to take an 048 and 046 piston and measure them up. Measure overall height, wrist pin to dome of piston, wrist pin to skirt, overall diameter. Any other things I should measure? Going to look at locator pins for rings also to compare. Maybe I can do a little turning on the piston and make use of an 046 piston instead of trying to bush the 048 down to 12mm from 13 for the 044 rod.

042 has a smaller bore than an 044. 048 and 046 are the same bore, but they're a different series of saw. The cylinders may be different in height

Not sure if I can make it work or not but an 046 and 048 are both 52mm with the same stroke. Have to measure pistons up and see how much different they are. Maybe a little turning and other work might make an 046 piston work in an 048 cylinder maybe not.

I do see one small problem, the muffler. The exhaust port is lower on the 048. You come possibly just have a exhaust stack like the early homelites.

046 piston is flat instead of domed and the 048 piston is roughly 120 thousands taller overall. Skirt to pin length looks equal and skirt width is the same. All the porting on the 048 jug is close to .125 taller to top of all ports transfers intake and exhaust. Base flange is .330 on the 048 cylinder and .246 on the 046 I’m comparing. Bolt pattern would require very little grinding to bolt the 044 case. Might not be worth it and I’ll need to get a degree wheel to check it all but just rough measurements almost looks like taking .125 off the base flange on the 048 jug would time the ports real close to the 046 jug. Bottom of lower transfers would be a little lower along with intake and exhaust port. Don’t know if it would be below the skirt and have freeporting on the exhaust but the little lower intake would help wouldn’t it? How about lower transfers being a little lower. So what are everyone’s thoughts about cutting .125 or little more off base maybe make pop up piston out of the 046 and make a saw out of it. Will need to make my own exhaust for it since port is so low compared to an 044/046.

All location pins for rings in same spots and 046 piston lighter by quite a bit just lifting them also thinner rings.

Or does a person try an 064 piston instead if I were to try and build this saw.

Is the 064 piston taller? If the base is thick enough, you definitely could remove 0.125” from the base. It would definitely be interesting.

Base is around .100 thicker on the 048 jug vs the 046jug. I was thinking same thing 064 piston maybe cut into a little bit of a pop-up. Cut .100 to .125from base of 048 jug and check the skirt clearance on piston. Then see what all the timing numbers are and go from there. This is just a rough mock up, I know I’ll need to do some better measuring. And after it’s all done who knows might be the same as an 046/044 hybrid cut wise. Or some variable could make it a little faster or slower won’t know unless I build it. One things for sure it will be different. Have to talk to my machinist uncle about cutting base and piston.

Maybe some of the saw builders will chime in and give me an opinion on how nuts I am or not to think of doing what will probably end up being equal to a 044/046 hybrid.

Ok sounds good I’ll need to order one. Think I’ll build it and see if it’s a waste or not, how about skirt length? 272 shorter than and 064? Of course if piston is enough taller to keep me from having to drop jug as much I won’t need the long skirt to keep from freeporting.
