I've got an 036 that uses half a tank of oil to 1 tank of fuel. Can the pump be upgraded?

I don't know of any upgrades to the pump. I will defer to others with knowledge of modifications. However a saw of that age could have a pump diaphragm that is not as pliable as it was when new. Maybe just rebuilding the oil pump with stock parts would help.

I dug around and found you can use 046 parts.

No diaphragm on these pumps. Mods can be done to increase the piston stroke though.

There was an upgrade of some sort that involved the oil pump from an 046/ms460. I can’t remember if you swapped the plunger and control shafts or if it was the whole pump that got swapped. I believe @drf256 has done it. Mayhaps he can shed some light on this topic?

It's not possible to directly swap the 046/460 oil pump into an 036. The 036 pump uses an external hose ala 064/084 and the 046/460 pump uses passages in the crankcase. I think I remember something about the pump piston and control bolt but Dr. Al would be the guy to ask @drf256 .

I’ve just modded the ramp and control bolt. Havent tried the 046 parts in an 036 pump. Never saw a reason.

If its a stock 036, a half tank of oil to a tank of gas is pretty good. A ported one can pull a 28 all day, so thats where its needed.

I have parts for both here. I can always look ans measure.

I'm running a stock 036 with a 25" bar and full comp RS33.

Are you cutting softwood?

Around here a stocker is a 20” max saw. Even my ported one wears a 20”. A bigger saw is simply faster through wood, ported or not.

A 361 and 046 oiler are identical externally. I don’t know if the ramp and control bolt are any different. I do know that I’ve seen new 361 (1135 model) come with an 046 (1128 model) out of the factory NIB.

When I modded the tail and control bolt, the 036 would run around equal.

@huskihl has a thread on how to do it.

If I find the time, I’ll pull the pins/piston/CB on both and see if interchangeable. If they are, it means that the HO oiler parts from an 046 could be put into an 036 pump.

I'm cutting pine, aspen, cottonwood, juniper, cedar, oak, and mesquite. Nothing bigger than 25" dbh except the cottonwood. I wood love another 660, but it is not in the budget.
