A buddy of mine brought over his 029 super for me to go through and do a tune up for him. So I thought about get him some more power while I have it. I have heard that a muffler mod itself wakes these heavy blocks of plastic up. By the look of the muffler opening I can see why. So I was curious what else people have did to get gains from these. Maybe advancing the timing some? How big has people opened these up with hitting them. Any suggestions on this would help. IMG_20160915_121931.jpg IMG_20160915_121950.jpg

You can cut it open as much as you want behind the bolt on cover. You'll want to nip the corner off the square tube that you expose when you do. Then double the opening size on the little cover.
It isn't necessary to bump the timing for a good gain.

Here's some feedback for the 290 bashers on the last one i did for a professional firewood cutter:

"Just so you know....that still MS 290 I had you do the port work to and fix is the best running saw ever .. I literally owe....."

There were to many expletives to go verbatim. Lol
He has a large collection of work saws to pick through and this is his go to.
There isn't a model that today's cutter will suggest that he doesn't actually own.

Like I said Chris, it's not mine. If it was it would be properly disposed of or sold locally. Which ever came first.
I'm just poking at the stihlheads. Everybody loves to hate em but they've cut more wood than most other series of saws.

290 and 390 have been good working saws for most who use them with some respect .
I rebuilt a MS 390 for a friend who does a ton of fire wood cutting , saw sees a lot of use cutting hardwood .

I had an 039 that kept up with my buddies 038Mag. Nuttin wrong with those saws.

Should respond that same as most Adam. You can open those holes like an "L" and then cut the front cover up to the bevel. There's many pics on google of mods. If you go through the center depression, you bypass the baffle and they are supposed to get noisier.

i would drill a 3/4 inch hole in the baffle and leave it alone.
