A Stihl engineer told me, they still do this to maximize the airstream from the flywheel and use it just for cooling the saw as best as possible, i don't know if thats true or they beeing just lazy. Personally it annoys me a little bit with my 661 and 500i, my 395's and 390's don't need that...

From what i know so far, it's a standard carb without MT on the 881. And yes, because of the traditional Stihl construction (carb on the tank not on the crankcase) there is no pre filtration like on the 261 or 462. It should have a bigger HD2 Filter.
