The Wood ID Thread ( or name this wood type )

Looks like a Laurel oak or Darlington Oak. My Dad and I used to collect acorns when we traveled to visit family in the fall. We'd plant them in pots and if they sprouted and survived he'd set them out. His property had a few oaks when they bought it around '71. Now those oaks we planted are...

Lets hear it for top of the line PPE!

I was there a few weeks after the Bohol earthquake and super typhoon Yolanda late 2013. Much destruction everywhere and crews of 2-3 guys with a Stihl all over cutting lumber to repair or rebuild houses. Saw a couple of brand new 660 looking saws. 36" bars. Maybe 42. They like to work...

Lets hear it for top of the line PPE!

My wife's from the Philippines. Been over there six times. My in-laws live in a rural area. Lots of free-hand milling just like that. Guys with big Stihls. Never saw any other brand. One visit I watched a couple of guys with an ancient Stihl (loud as he'll) drop an 18-20" acacia and turn...

    DIY auxiliary oiler

Looks good, mopar, but how do you deal with changing cut thickness? Does your bottle mount just adjust up/down to accommodate? I like the idea of copper line if height can be easily adjusted.

That's a nice one, JJ. Free bump.

    California Bay (Laurel)

Stacked, stickered, and strapped. Learning (?) from my mistakes on the madrone which moved a lot with just weight on top of the stacks.

    Oak

I've been using yellow wood glue to seal my ends. First coat I add about 25% water so that it soaks in better. Second coat same or straight out of the bottle. The off-brand stuff is pretty cheap. I think a PVA drywall primer might also work, but not sure how well it would do outdoors. Latex...

    California Bay (Laurel)

After a few more days drying, I might sand a piece of the wane offcut and try a little tung oil or watco and see how it looks. Need to make room to stack and sticker the stuff. Planning to try ratchet straps around the ordered stacks to keep things from moving. Some of my madrone went crazy...

Finished up the other two logs on Sunday. Got nine more slabs. Interesting wood. The slabs I cut a week ago have already oxidized. The sapwood went from pale yellow when freshly cut to a nice chestnut brown. The heartwood stayed the same or possibly lightened up. Slabs from last week in my...

    Jacob J.

Early last year I was on the hunt for a powerhead for my first Alaskan mill. A couple of guys had 288xps for sale at the time. I messaged them and made a deal on a rebuilt saw by Jacob j. I've used it primarily for milling hardwood and it has run like a champ. I've put about 3-4 gallons of...

Another thing I noticed was with the 28" bar and no aux oiler I was getting a lot of chain stretch. Every few cuts I'd have to tighten it up. Well, this was a new bar and chain (same Woodland Pro ripping chain but now 36") and it stretched a good bit in the first cut, but after that it stayed...

Last year when I first got it and milled a bunch of green madrone, it definitely was too dry. Part of that was oiler adjustment. Got it set to max and it still got very hot. Sap was baking on to the sides of the chain with fine dust embedded in it. The little extra oil definitely helps.

Saw ran well. Cuts seemed faster and smoother in the middle quarter-sawn cuts than the first and last. Strange. Chain needed sharpening after 7 cuts. Looks like I muffed the setup on the 1" slab and wedged it.

Finally got time and dry weather to mill some of the laurel I got from a "neighbor" 12 miles away back in February. It was slightly too big for my 28" bar so I got to use my 36 for the first time. Also got my homemade aux oiler setup and used it. Worked fine and helped keep the chain and bar...

    Spalted Birch

"Neighbor" about 12 miles away down some squirrely goat trails had a large multi-trunk California Laurel (a.k.a. Oregon Myrtle) taken down. Long story short, I went over to get a few pieces to mill. Major workout. 45 degree slope. Bigger wood than he said. Only brought my small saw. Got 2x...

    So what's your "real" job?

Cool pic of an old-school mill. My great grandfather bought and operated his own mill cutting railroad ties on his property which is now under Lake Murray in South Carolina. Unfortunately he was killed in an mill accident in 1924 when my grandfather was only 10 months old...
