Splitter wedge. Hard face or no?

I built one from scratch about 4 years ago, and everyone I know and myself have been using it constantly. I did not face any of it but did pit teeth on the plate. I would say hardfacing is money that does not need to be spent. -Scott

    The bench vise

I found another old vise to clean up, plan on giving it to my brother as a birthday gift. Athol 614 1/2. In very lightly used condition for $60 on Facebook marketplace. I took it all apart and gave it some love. This thing cleaned up NICE, kinda wanting to keep it now! -scott

    Box wedge build

Yeah you would have been better served with sharper angles on the wedges and continuity (or stiffener) plates welded into the sides of the beam connecting the flanges to the web at the point of loading. -scott

    SELLING Dolmar 111 parting out

How much for the choke lever? Can get one on ebay for 12 bucks shipped but I'd rather give someone here the money instead. -scott

    The bench vise

I got a used (old) reed machinist vice at a local business auction. Wow, what a great vice. I had used lots of vises, including wiltons, and this is the best vise (square, tight, smooth) I have ever used. Mine has smooth tool steel jaws that don't mar my bars or anything else and clamp down like...

Well I got her all lined out. Put a piece of 5/8" plate on the bottom of the foot (total thickness is now an inch and seven eighths) , and also put some texture on the top to keep logs from popping out. I had previously left them off purposely because I had seen people suggesting it hampers log...

Well I have been splitting on this guy for a bit now, working all the bugs out. Got some hose routing and leaking problems figured and sorted out. Took it out yesterday (has not left my house since built) to help a buddy who is dangerously low on wood. Ran flawlessly all day (besides being...

    Husky bar question

I'm thinking about putting a short 3/8 bar on my 450. Does anyone make a 3/8 .050 14" bar? I have a 562 to take care of the larger stuff with 20" bar. Thinking the 450 would be perfect with a 14" 3/8 chisel chain. -Scott

I split almost 100% white oak as I have 130 acres to harvest from. I thought about log strippers but have yet need them in the 5 years I've been living here. I previously had on permanent loan an iron and oak 26 ton. -Scott

    Who welds aluminum here?

Different strokes, same outcome. I've been welding in machine shops almost 20 years. Every hole I've ever fixed was put in a machine and got the hole put back where it was and re-tapped. Never had any voids on the drilled hole or the threads cut into them. One trick i do use is to run a hot arc...

    Who welds aluminum here?

This is exactly what I would and have done on any and all aluminum thread repairs with threaded pillars. Cut the hole open at least 50% so you have a U with threads in the bottom and weld it up solid. Mill/drill/tap and it's like brand new. -Scott

    VP 50:1 premixed fuel

Get yourself a quart of 710 and mix it in. Save the rest for all your other saws\ope its great oil. I use 710 exclusively in all my stuff and it loves it! It does not stink or smoke and I love the way my saws and my weed eater run. I also run 40:1 -scott
