    Part Six: The Exhaust System

I'm wondering if it is the 45 degree angle that the exhaust wave hits that prevents a return wave from pressurizing the exhaust port. This is an interesting concept that needs some dyno time.

    MS390 / 039 pop up piston

The two-stroke mixture will leave a thin layer of oil on the jet. Use contact cleaner, brake cleaner, something to wash off the oil. You want the reamer to cut into the jet. I use a chair with two arm rests to help steady my hands as I twist the reamer. Remove the pump side cover to allow the...

    MS390 / 039 pop up piston

Just drill it in place. The first run through it with the .3mm reamer takes some patience. Take it real slow, almost everybody breaks this first reamer trying to expedite the process. After the first reamer, the others take much less time.

    MS390 / 039 pop up piston

Mostly it is to keep the low speed circuit flowing well when the revs drop. If you want a saw with good low speed torque, then this is a mod to make on the Walbro with one of those EPA circuits. Yes, you will create more emissions, that is a matter for you to decide.

    MS390 / 039 pop up piston

You use the low speed needle. When you screw the needle in all the way the needle will be seated. Measure the length of the low speed adjustment screw that is sticking out of the carb (or mark the screw at carb body). Take the screw out of the carb and lay it on top of the wet side. If you...

    Piston wash patterns

Yeah, a lot of guys in Oz do that to keep the filter cleaner. The 'air injection; system may work well in Swedish woods of clean, green wood where it deals with wood CHIPS, but here in Oz, the dry hardwood creates lots of dust. After I blocked off the air injection system I was surprised to see...

    Piston wash patterns

When I modded my 450 Husky I ran into the overheating piston issue. I did multiple mods to get it to breathe better and it did. It went from a power peak at about 8,000 rpm to 12,000+ rpm. The piston looked like yours, not just the carbon, but also the top of the piston above the ring touching...

    Tree felling video

Yeah, at age 74 I just don't move the way I used to. The last tree I dropped was a bit hairy with all the dead branches it could catch. Everything went as planned, but I decided that was the LAST tree I was going to drop. Hell, I spent more time clearing a trail away from the tree than I did in...

The mighty stihl 064 and early 066

I rebuilt a 064 for a mate with the 92cc jug. Was there ever a dyno run with that jug? - It was more than he ever needed as all he cut was small wood.

Do you prefer a 7 or 8 pin sprocket, and why?

My three saws started out with 7-pins. Then I started modding them, which changed the power, then I started to increase the cutting angle (raker depth) until it got a bit grabby. - Then I went to an 8-pin and ran a more conservative (6 degrees) of cutting angle. If I was running a longer bar...

    Random Thought Of The Day

Unfortunately, as I get older the good, solid friends keep 'dropping off the perch'.

Chinese Professional Chainsaw from eBay, review

I'm getting too old to do any serious cutting. I gave my Chinese Husky 365 clone to my local fire brigade. It has a ported 77cc jug, modded Zama carb and a few other tricks. With the 24" bar and an 8-pin it rips through Ozzie hardwood. The guys are happy to have it. Sometimes there is a big...

What oil is best? and what ratio?

Interesting as we say in Australia, 'horses for courses'. I prefer a tail heavy saw as BOTH hands can carry the weight, thus taking more weight off the front arm. It not only feels lighter to me, but I can move the saw around easier.

What oil is best? and what ratio?

Yep, surprise, surprise, more oil equals more lubrication. When I raced motorcycles that was what worked. If you ran more oil on your chain, the chain would last longer. If you put more oil on your air filter, it would block more debris. If you flushed more oil through the engine, it would last...

What oil is best? and what ratio?

Is this thread still going? I thought that BLUE oil was decided to be the favorite/bestest oil from all the testing and opinions. I'll keep using the blue oil until, well maybe, another 900 pages of opinions decides something else.

    carburetor

Mate, you may just have found the problem. Most of the air filters on these saws are marginal to begin with, if they start getting clogged they are hopeless. I've had to build my own air filters or use a nylon mesh filter to get the best performance from my saws. Good luck.

    MS362 CARB - "DOESN'T START" - 4-strokin'

I had a similar situation. Fuel filter looked good, but I decided to test it. Took it off and tried to suck through it, nope it was clogged. Put on a fresh one and no more problems.

I'm a diabetic, thanks for that useful information.

    carburetor

This statement is what tends to oppose a bad fuel filter. If you can turn out the high speed needle and get it to blubber, obviously you can get enough fuel. However, if you change the fuel filter and that isn't it, then at least that can be eliminated.
