Are you making a baseplate and/or filling the case? Looks like you'll have a sealing issue by the looks of the gasket.

I'm in the process of freshening up an 038 Mag 2 with unknown history for firewood use that had been sitting for who knows how many years and the owner is debating what topend to use. The original early casting topend with new rings/new piston and rings or a new complete later casting topend...
Cheap, cheap $30 Hutzl 390 topend. Makes 125 psi. Also came with a ding in the cylinder with a burr. Put it on a junky frankensaw to play with.

They do have the same crank. The 288 has a taller deck than the 394/5. When I measured mine there was a considerable height difference. 5-7mm if I remember right. It's been awhile though.

Last I looked into it I didn't think there was enough material to be removed for it to have enough strength to hold together. I was thinking of having a long rod installed along with dropping the cylinder.

Yup, remove the ring from the boot. Push an edge of the boot away from the orange hole and slip it towards the cylinder. The boot has a lip on it larger than the hole in the orange wall. Reninstalll in reverse order.
