Why would you engineer away from this?

If it makes you feel better, echo caps are still similar to that. They get condemned as cheap, sharp, and plastic.

I have seen the mounting strategies for the 1300 coil. Good idea.

    Stihl 066 run-on

On the original saw in question, it is an aluminum flywheel saw that originally had the dogleg coil. By the time I ended up with it, there was no external trigger. Would the 046 coil be a more likely candidate? Is the run-on symptom something that can indeed be coil related?

    Stihl 066 run-on

Yes, it is a short case. Quite different configuration than the 660's I have worked on. This saw is a real resurrection effort.

    Stihl 066 run-on

Thank you for the solid responses. Good point. I have moved the L screw from 3/4 turns to past 3-turns trying to chase the lean bog. The run-on changed slightly, but was still present. The bog was slightly better at the 3/4 - 1 turn range, but I expect zero bog without a chain on the saw...

    Stihl 066 run-on

This is a recently finished Stihl 066. I’m having trouble tuning out the the run-on as the saw returns to idle and the off-idle bog. The saw is ported with machine work. Complete rebuild. Meteor piston. 461 coil. It will idle all day. It seems like it settles into that idle nicely, but...

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

This saw will do most cutting at 5k - 6k feet elevation. I’m trying to create a plan for compression and case compression. This is basically a salvage effort at this point. I might as well do the best I can.

Part numbers for the piston pin and crossover bearing.

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

It’s been a while. Here is an update. I touched up a bit of the port work and need to decide where to go from here I installed the Meteor 288 piston, using a 13mm pin and a crossover roller bearing (395xp, I believe) to match the 12mm crank. The pistons are quite a bit different. The 660...

I ordered a Meteor 288xp piston on Saturday night from HLSupply. I'll post back once the piston arrives.

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

The current Meteor 660 piston vs KS piston from an 288xp. If the updated 288xp piston is anywhere close on crown height, I think I am back in business. I will likely need to cut the base a bit more, but I have plenty of room there.

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

Looks like a newer 288xp piston may indeed have wide enough skirts to make this work. I measured the older style which has the scalloped skirts. https://opeforum.com/threads/husky-288xp-piston.6537/ From @Frogfarmer

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

It is open on the flywheel side, and just about parallel on the clutch side. Accidentally is a reasonable word to describe this port.

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

Wiseco from CCC are all sold out and frankly, this port is way to wide to support the rings, as stated above.

Stihl 660 piston skirt re: “I made a mistake”

I can’t believe I did this. I already cut the base and band, lots of shaping in the upper transfers, epoxy in the intake, clearancing the outside of the cylinder, etc. Found a 288 piston. It is 3mm wider across the skirt. Barely covers the port, not enough to be an ideal option. This was...
