Where in Ontario are you from? I am close to getting a nib 346 state side and not sure which side of the border that I’ll get it modified on.
Thanks
John
I need to be blunt about this! The side plate on round ground chain does not make any initial attack on the wood fibre. It may mulch the chips as they are redirected into the chip channel.
Square ground chain has a side plate that certainly severs wood, but not round ground.
So there!
I should have listened to your wisdom ( knowledge in action). I bought two small spline 3/8 from Husky but slightly larger than what is required for the 261.
No biggy, they’ll fit my 346.
Turns out the Stihl dealer exchanged the 325 rims for 3/8 on the two 261’s I bought.
Thanks
That is not what I wanted to hear!
So what you’re saying is a small spline sprocket off a 346 won’t fit the 261?
The only reason I asked is because I’m in town and not packing my 261 with me.
I’d like to try a 1/4” wheel tilted right over with just the bottom of the wheel dressed to 0 degrees with no radius and dressed at 5 degrees. The side plate of a hollow ground chain does nothing.
My own observations says a round file makes the cutters hollow ground while a grinder makes the cutters semi square.
A hollow ground filed chain does nothing for the side plate except making it hollow, but rather gets underneath the top plate and makes a sharp working corner.
When grinding it...
I’ve found that I only radius one side of the wheel and flatten the bottom of it. Haven’t done it yet but would like to try the thickest wheel possible such as a 404 to incidentaly grind out gutter material fast.
It’s really hard to describe hand filing either verbally or with a diagram.
Once the cutters and gullet are where they should be it’s just a simple matter of removing microscopic amounts of metal on a wood dull chain.
The same with grinding.
You need to get the gullet symmetrical before doctoring under the top plate and getting a crisp working corner. It’s all about being light fisted and knowing what you want to accomplish
That’s the first thing I noticed. It seems to be a fuel mizer and should get better as it breaks in.
I just burned 2 gallons of Amsoil 32:1 through a 346 and didn’t like the smell and wondering what I was vaping.
Just for now I removed the arrestor, hoping to get that 5% gain. Not sure how long break in is, but I suspect one gallon of 40:1 Stihl mix should smarten it up.
Is there any point to those friction fit muffler plugs that block access to the muffler bolts?
Nice thread. I put 3 tanks through a new 261C and I have to say I’m impressed. For a small stock saw it did ok with 16” 3/8 40:1. I felt like scissor hands and sliced and diced just one cord of dead standing limby spruce into 16”.just for *s-words and giggles.
It purrs like a kitten and starts...
