When you took the piston off, did the wrist pin and bearing look ok?

Are they conks? The ones we have here are heavy and incredibly dense. The tree is usually dead, or about to die when a conk appears.

Called my local dealer today. They carry Vallorbe double bevel... $12.95 each. No biggy to send anyone a dozen. They currently have a handful, but will be getting more in soon. But if we're gonna start our own stockpile of files, you can sign me up for a dozen also.
