Yes. Check them closely for any defect's. Pay close attention to the rollers and cages. Check the big end rod bearing as well. Lateral movement of the rod on the big end bearing is normal. Vertical movement is no good.
Turn the crank slowly by hand with the cylinder off. If you feel any...
Don’t run that saw anymore until it’s had a thorough inspection. The scratches and pit marks in the piston are text book bearing failure. A bearing failure would also explain the possible air leak and the running characteristics you’ve described.
If you’re not scared of new technology I’d say go with the 572 or 462. Of those 2 saws I’d pick the brand that has a local dealer with a good reputation
Going off memory here, 272 piston has approx. .100” more compression height. I believe the last one I did I cut the band and the piston crown and either used a real thick cylinder base gasket or doubled up the stock gaskets.
I think I had to do something with wrist pin ??? Possibly had to use...
046 coil will bolt right on a 461 and works great.
046 vs 461, I’d say the 461 wins but both saws respond really good to porting.
As for performance it kinda depends on what you’re wanting out of a ported saw.
Now that I think about it, it might of actually been a little acetone that guys were adding to the dye and water soak.
I know the maxflow plastic and stihl bar scabbards won’t take the dye but I also never tried adding anything to the soak other then water and dye.
Nothing to it really. Just heat up a big pot of water to a real low boil, add the dye and put the plastic parts in. I usually let ‘em soak for at least 1/2 hour and then give em a good wash in fresh water. The longer the parts soak the deeper the dye penetrates. Some guys add (I think) salt...
This^^^ and I will add that dealer support should also play a part in your decision. Plus if you’re cutting that amount of wood you’re likely cutting wood year round regardless of weather conditions so I’d also recommend looking a unit with heated handles. Your hands will thanks you
Don’t mess around with a Chinese BB 044 piston. If for no other reason the quality just isn’t there especially if you’re going to port the cylinder. Oem or meteor with caber rings is the way to go.
After a good port job there’s almost no difference between the 044/440 jugs. The ported 046/460 jug on a 044/440 chassis imo is the best bang for the buck and will easily outperform the others
