I know it isn't a chainsaw, but do y'all know if all 309s had the same ignition coil?

Would the timing being off cause a saw to run rich and lack power? After messing with this one for a while I finally got it to start at just 1/4 turn out on the high and low and that was after I adjusted the metering arm to slightly below even with the floor of the carb.

How hot is normal for a saw engine to run and how hot is too hot? I'm going to get an infrared temp gun to add to my tool bag and would like to know some target temps for tuneing saws.
