I'll add the redwoods to that list. Can't even begin to grasp the size of them, and our relative insignificance both in size and lifespan, without standing under them.

But after you drove for hours, you didn't see the grand canyon or the Green River though, did you? Or eat tamales out of some abuela's beat-up hatchback? I don't particularly love sitting in the car or plane for hours at a time either, but the destination often makes it worthwhile.

Actually, she's somewhat of an entrepreneur. Currently sitting on the rug counting her cash. I could probably hire her to check in here and babysit these kids. She could definitely teach them a thing or two...

    The official OPE daycare thread

My 8 year old daughter absolutely demolished a pile of Ethiopian food when we were in St Paul the other day. Had a lovely time walking around the Como conservatory. There were all sorts of people there, lots of languages being spoken, people in wheelchairs and other kinds of adaptive equipment...

But, HOW DO YOU KNOW?? Having never been there or done that?

Never traveled. Hates travel. Here's a great example of ignorance. It's an incredible learning experience to see how other people live. Don't have to go very far to see new things.

    Maple syrup 2024

Unlikely. Looks like it's gonna be cold and or snowing. We don't have much sap on hand. Might run a little this afternoon and tomorrow. Gonna cook what's on hand tomorrow afternoon and then it looks like we're taking a break for cold weather and a pile of snow. Hopefully we catch some nice sap...

    Maple syrup 2024

Happened to be over near one of the local supply retailers (https://pittmanmaplefarms.com/) with my trailer today. I have been out of quart glass since I bottled a big batch in November. Nice to finally restock. There were some mixed reactions to my 11' 6" high stack of expensive glass...

    Maple syrup 2024

Thanks for the teamwork guys. Yes, plenty of syrup for sale. I'm actually needing to go get bottles and bottle some up in the next week or so. I am out of both quarts and pints. I buy pallets of both sizes and while the pints didn't change sizes, quarts went up 60% compared to a year ago. Gotta...

    Maple syrup 2024

Looking good! I can smell it from here. We cooked yesterday morning in some serious wind. Temps were crazy (65+) so I felt like we needed to get the sap dealt with. There were wildfire warnings, and even with 14' of cooker length, 30' of stack, and the fall back to earth, our rig definitely...

    What really grinds my gears!!!

Fixed it for you. There are parts of California that are unbelievably beautiful and more rural and remote than anywhere in Wisconsin. And there are parts that are huge populous cities. And everywhere in between. Just can't sum up that much area with generalizations real easily.

    Maple syrup 2024

Ground was frozen this morning, so after I skidded out some more ash logs I hauled up the syrup we made on Tuesday.

    Maple syrup 2024

The strange weather continues. 65 degrees and beautiful though a bit gusty yesterday. Sap ran great. Today started out beautiful. Had a fair amount of sap on hand so I started the RO at 10 and we cooked this afternoon. At 1:15 when we fired up it was lovely out there and about 46 degrees. When...

    Maple syrup 2024

Things are shaping up for it to be a nice day in the sugarbush. Brought in some sap between yesterday afternoon and now, so we've got something to cook. Tackled some plumbing puzzles this morning so hopefully I can get all the sap where it needs to be. The bulk tanks I use have either...

Whats on the Grill or Smoker?

The trail down there is pretty soggy, but once you get down there it's pretty solid. No rush though, hopefully it'll get better over the next month or so. I won't try to twist your arm into it, just trying to work that brisket angle. :)
