Do thicker gauge chains wear less?

Do chains with wider drivers wear less? .058 has 17.5% more area than .050, so the drive force is less concentrated. Is it noticeable? I think my .058 chains look better than the .050 chains. Less rounding of the driver edge. Is is just me?

    Brands of chain

I was grinding a few loops of .325 full chisel last night and they were mixed brands, husq/oregon and stihl. The first one was the husq/oregon and I kept thinking the chassis and cutters were smaller than I remember. Then I got to the stihl chain and it almost looked like 3/8 compared to the...

Longest bar on a ported 346/350?

I find myself needing/wanting a longer bar on my ported 350. It has an 18" bar on it now and it's too short for some of the cutting I do. The oiler is already modified, and I can mod it more if needed. I am running .325 chain and would like to go to a 24/28" bar. Cannon makes the super and...

    What's a good price for a 372xp?

A local guy has a 372xp x-torq for sale, says it cut one tree. Looks new. He wants ~$950. I don't know if I can justify that right now. How do the x-torq models port out?

    I ordered a 325 bar tip

I ordered a 325 bar tip for one of my stihl bars so I could run it on my ported 350. It currently has an 18" bar on it, but I have a 25" stihl bar sitting here with a chunked out tip, and the rest of it looks ok. I figured it was cheaper to swap tips than to buy a whole new bar. It should be...

Finally able to run a saw again

I tore a rotator cuff about a month ago and have not been able to run my saw or do a lot of other things. I have been doing exercises and therapy and putting my wife's homemade ointment on it. It feels much better and I am able to most things for at least a little while. It's a little sore...

Who else uses tall timber 2 stroke oil?

I have been using it for years with great results. I just don't hear many people mention it.

    Broken ms650

Got an ms650 that ate a circlip. Chunks of piston in the air filter, carb, muffler, and crankcase. The wrist pin looks blue and will have to be pressed out. Not sure if the crank is ok, because the rod bearing is stiff and feels grabby. will a 660 crank fit? Looking to rebuild and run if...

    Ported Husqvarna 350 (video)

I ported my 350 several years ago, and had to tear it down because the lower case was warped, causing an air leak. It has been sitting in a box ever since, but I dug it out this weekend and put it back together. I have 4 tanks through it now. I had my son take a video of it tonight.

    Sloppy piston pin?

I'm putting my ported 350 back together and noticed that the piston pin is loose in the (hyway) piston. It has some up/down movement (about .004") and looks like the pin has pressed up into the bore a little. It has about an hour of run time. 2 strokes always push down, so maybe it's not a...

    Air leaks and previous owners

I posted a while back about my 350 build. Well, the saw ran great for 6 cuts and then went funky so I shut it down. I tore it down and the sealer had not cured and dissolved and coated the i side of the motor. Cleaned it up, put it back together with a new tube of motoseal. It ran great, but...

    G forces on parts

I was just talking with my wife and the subject of G forces came up, so we ran a few numbers out of curiosity. A 3” chainsaw clutch at 15,000 rpm experiences almost 10,000 g’s. If one of the weights weighs 2 oz, it ends up weighing ~1,200 lbs! That’s crazy!!! The chain experiences ~5,000 g’s...

Unlimited coil for ported husky 450?

I ported a husqvarna 450 yesterday and it hits the limiter like a hammer even after fattening it up. Is there an unlimited coil available for it? It’s a pretty easy saw to work on, but boy is there a lot of metal to take out of ‘em.

Not sold on square ground yet

I just tried a brand new 28” loop of square ground Stihl RS on my ported ms390. I filed the rakers to about .027. The right side needed a lot more filing than the left. It looks/feels pretty sharp, but I can’t tell any difference between it and my own round ground chain as far as cutting speed...

Just tried square ground, am I missing something?

I just tried a brand new 28” loop of square ground Stihl RS on my ported 65cc saw. I filed the rakers to about .027. The right side needed a lot more filing than the left. It looks/feels pretty sharp, but I can’t tell any difference between it and my own round ground chain as far as cutting...

    Dolmar 510 not responding

I am working on a Dolmar 510 that wouldn’t run anymore. It was so packed with crud from 10+ years that the clutch and flywheel were barely able to turn. I stripped it down, cleaned it, ported it a bit, gave it a new bar and chain, did a muffler mod, and it fires right up, idles great, revs up...

    “Kit” saws... Thoughts?

I have seen “kit” saws offered by a few different vendors: huztl, hl, etc... and the prices are all over the map. Are they all made by the same place or are they different kits? I have been asked to build a couple and would like to know if there is a difference.

Chain gauge and making up my mind

I stopped in to visit the local husqvarna dealer today so I could get some new chains for my ported 350. All they had was the safety link .325 x .058 that I already have (I bought two and will grind off the safety humps to get through winter.). I really wanted regular full chisel. Even the...

    Sachs Dolmar 166 piston?

I have a guy with a 166 and it needs a piston. I found one on ebay, but it’s almost $200 and it comes from germany. Is there another piston that will fit? Does anyone happen to have a piston laying around or sitting on a shelf in a dusty box? Edit: the ebay piston is not even oem, it’s a...

    Carbon removal?

How does everyone remove carbon deposits from piston/cylinder? This is the worst one I’ve ever worked on? Normally it just scrapes off, but this stuff is ON there! I got the loose stuff, but wow this stuff is hard. I am going to have a discussion with the owner about mixing gas and tuning...
