PAST 2018 Upstate NY GTG - Sunday April 22nd

More to the point, who's gonna approach a mob armed with chainsaws with a summons-book? C'mon. With all those mosquito-fogger saws who'll see a tad more smoke?

PAST 2018 Upstate NY GTG - Sunday April 22nd

Sounds like someone else has caught the "bug", Jeff? I offered you a chance last year, y'know. But yes, I'll be doing lots of milling, mainly black cherry, back in CT this year, and have been set back for a while with nasty sinus-thing. Not planning on bringing mill-stuff up N this year, just a...

PAST 2018 Upstate NY GTG - Sunday April 22nd

Steve, now you got my attention. Will look to be there. Just can't get into slicing lily-pads to make noise. Hopefully the logs will not be wrapped in mud, like in '17. I get a bit O-C about files & chains.

Best and worst advertising for a saw shop

IME, for potential local customers, word-of-mouth from previous customers is a significant channel for referrals. Of course, that works both ways. Stories I've heard from acquaintances about certain dealers swayed me from ever darkening their door. One auto dealer I know of even gave kickbacks...

My wife cut for the first time last weekend

A wife who wants her own saw, and runs it well, is a real rarity and a keeper. Good on you both. (Takes two to tango.) Of all the lighter saws I've tried, the real standout is the Dolmar 421. Power, low vibes, reasonable weight, super durable, great value- IOW a no-brainer.

    Which Chain

Having experienced many times how quickly, and precipitously, full-chisel can go dull in clean wood, I'm a convert to semi-chisel, and for all purposes from felling/bucking/limbing to milling. Found it to be way more durable than full-chisel, making momentary speed difference meaningless to me...

Do three-saw plans still exist on here?

Depends. Can't bring but so many. Almost all milling lately- big bitternut hickory, black locust, and a sugar maple yet to drop. 3-saw plan evolved as: 576AT Husqy w/32" semi-chisel full-skip in 30" Alaskan III for slabbing Dolly 6100 2/24" semi-chisel full-skip in Granberg Mini-Mill for...

    Went Kinetic over hydro splitter

How a given saw model does noodling is also very much a result of the design of the clutch cover. Some are waaaaay better than others. Seems some stihl-boys take the clutch covers from some models to the bandsaw to kind-of open them up, and let the chips out. Some are excellent in OEM form...

Carb spacer effect on a piston ported cylinder?

Not necessarily. Take a look at the induction "forest" on a big-block light-alloy engine of a McLaren Can-Am car of days past. Point is, each cyl has its private intake tract. Chrysler had some interesting "cross-fire" manifolds back when, again with each cyl having its own long induction tract...

What oil is best? and what ratio?

All my 2-strokes like it, a lot, @ 50:1. Couple times a year a 6-pack of the little 12 oz jugs bundled in whenever ordering other stuff. So the freight-fee doesn't sting as much. And for $10 and change, Homie's "Power Care" b&c oil works as well as any. Costs less, and nearby.

    Haddon milling attachment

About the surface finish, seems most (all?) ripping chain has semi-chisel cutters. Been experimenting with options for some serious milling, and off-the-reel 30 SC WoodlandPro gives as good finish as their 30 RP ripping chain, in black locust. Seems a good tooling combo is Alaskan III for...

    I may be sick

Funny how to some it's all about the numbers. Oil/gas are cheap, so why not use them? And get your exercise walking from the boob-tube to the T-stat. Some will renew gym memberships. To some that makes no sense when you can "close that loop" with existing tools out in the woods in the fresh air...

    Chains,sometimes they drive you nuts

Nooooo! Not do that! Chuck it over here, I get lots of good mileage out of it. You just need a sharp flat file in a Granberg guide for the depth gauges. I refuse to chuck any chain that makes good chips. I even use some for milling on a 20" bar.

Review of Tri-Link Bar Tip Greaser

Non-syn greases are mixtures of soap & oil, and separate. I'm partial to Valvoline "Full-Synthetic" grease (lithium EP) from local parts store. How much can it cost for a shot or two from a HF cheapie gun? Only OEM bar without grease hole I've seen is on 6100 Dolly. The blue grease in my Oregon...

My self esteem could use this measure method

    What a cream-puff of a saw- hope there's a chance I can snag it.

Husqvarna 525LS 50 hour review (pic heavy)

A few months back I told the Land Steward I volunteer with at huge Audubon preserves in town, that he needed to get a proper brushcutter. The 130 4-mix Stihl they had was useless for our purposes. We tried. Got a go-ahead, contacted Bob @ Ashokan for suggestions, given what we found worked...

    Sharpening brush cutter blades

Most definitely, and you can get 9" chainsaw-cutter blades for $15 from Forester. Total no-brainer. For mostly smaller-stuff, I might use a 20-tooth 10" carbide (got a few to use up, can't sharpen-no diamond wheel), or 11" or 12" Husqvarna steel blades. Those 3- or 4-knife Husqy blades are...

Husqvarna backpack blower owners check in here.

My BT150 works fine IMO as delivered. Handle a bit forward, tube free to rotate, so that optional flattened discharge can be used to best advantage for directional control, to left or right. One sweet engine- runs like new in its fifth year, clearing leaves from a swath of the neighborhood. Did...
