Forgive me if this isn't the right place, but I figured it was best to discuss here as it is kind of a landscaping question.

My wife and I moved into our home and I am slowly getting around to some of the things I want to get done. Total of 7 acres. Took a bunch of dead or dying trees down around the property, but we have 3 acres of woods that I want to cut a trail through. Basically around the perimeter of our property. The issue is, the forest floor is blanketed with poison ivy. We are in upstate (central) NY, just an FYI. I am allergic, and have had it like 5 times already since we moved in and I started working outside.

So....with that said, what are some good options for me to at least clear a trail? Throw on a tyvek suit and a backpack sprayer of poison ivy killer? Thats the only thing I could think of. I do realize it will become a maintenance thing, and that the ivy will try to grow back.

Roundup, 1.5 times the suggested ratio. The large super concentrated container is about $100.00. I run 10oz for 3.5 gallons.

Apply one Saturday morning as the dew is drying out, wait a week, then apply again.
Will kill everything green, including bamboo with a third application.

As for the PI, Tecnu will be your go to wash down after you remove your clothes. Don’t scratch any itch until you wash down, no matter what !!

Apply a barrier cream, such as Ivy Block or Stokoguard, if you know you have a good chance of exposure to poison ivy. While no vaccine or medicine has been shown to prevent reactions to poison ivy, barrier creams containing bentoquatam seem to be effective in slowing the absorption of urushiol into the skin. Apply the cream as directed, usually about an hour before potential exposure, and thoroughly wash it off within four hours, reapplying as necessary.

If you can find it these days Fels Napa soap is about the best I have found for cleaning up (showering) with after being in poisin Ivy. start at your head and work down so any oil you wash and rince off continues to be removed.

As another person that has reactions to ivy, bad ones. I try to stay away from it all costs. But, sometimes you gotta deal with it.

It might sound weird or crazy but go to Walmart and buy you a bottle of the gojo orange with pumice from the car area. Keep a bottle in your shower.

As soon as you are done being around the ivy and hopefully you weren’t around it long as it gives the oil more time to get soaked in. Jump in the shower and scrub down with the gojo orange with pumice. I have had good luck with it. It does not always prevent a reaction but what I have noticed if I do get a reaction and each night take a shower with the gojo it seems to help dry it out faster and make it go away quicker.

I always have the gojo in the shower now. Anytime I am out in woods and think I might have walked around some ivy even if I didn’t see it I scrub down with it and rinse before using my normal soap.

I have also had success with the bars of lava soap but like the gojo liquid better. Just get the pumice one!

I hope you did not waste your time using glyphosate(round up) to kill the poison ivy. Though it may temporarily burn and even kill some of the leaves it is still very well alive. Poison ivy is a vine and goes very far into the ground. Also, it's irresponsible as all hell to dump that amount of an herbicide on your land you intend to enjoy for years. If you're still interested in killing it I'd be happy to help you. Be prepared to buy lots of tecnu and touch the plants.

I am all ears!! I went around and cut as many of the base vines as I could and sprayed the cut end of the vine. Sort of knowing that it probably wouldnt work.

What I've seen work best is to do what you've done, minus the round up. You need to find a concentrate of 2-4-D as the active ingredient. Mix it 50/50 with water and spray into the freshly cut vines. Check back every few days and if you see the vine oozing liquid, hit it again. I've done this quite a few times and none had come back at any of the properties. I hope you get rid of that nasty Shish

apply barrier cream, Suit up in a cheap tyvec suit. spray with glyphosphate at 1.5-2 times the labeled strength ad 1 drop of dish soap per tank. De-suit in a thoughful manner being careful not to let any exposed clothing touch skin. throw anything your keeping in the wash with Fels Naptha. apply tecnu extreme everywhere. rub it in. turn on cold water and get in the shower. apply some more tecnu. Finally just shower off and take some benadryl for a few days.

One application likely will not take care of it all. If it's going up trees you have to cut sections out of the vine, not just cut the vine. SPRAY IT ALL not just the trail. It will be back out on the trail by the end of the summer if you just spray the trail.

This does sound like an ideal situation for goats.

This is the best relief for the scratch
Jewelweed grows in ditches near creeks.
il_794xN.1543959969_64rs.jpg Boil the root and all then rub it on. To save throw in a jug. For your next encounter.

  1. Make a poison ivy killer spray: Combine 1 cup of salt and 1 gallon of vinegar in a pot and heat to dissolve the salt. Allow it to cool, then add and 8 drops of liquid dish soap and put the mixture in a spray bottle. You can spray the poison ivy or pour it directly on the plant. This will kill all vegetation, so be sure to only apply it to the poison ivy.
  2. Some have claimed that pouring bleach on the plant will have the same effect, however, this classifies as a chemical method.
  3. If you happen to have a goat or cow handy, they just love to eat it—without any side effects!

Ive been thinking about goats! I hear people "rent" them. I am concerned though as we have a healthy population of Coyote here. Theres a big pack of them around.

I did cut out sections of the vines. Didnt just do a single cut. And P.M.P - Would you believe I cant find that stuff anywhere on the property? I hear they grow together but, maybe not in upstate NY.

i get pretty severe poison ivy reactions as well. i get stuff called oral ivy off amazon, but many drug stores carry it. its just an extract of the oil from PI plant. 4-6 drops in a glass of water every morning, i still get a reaction, but its typically about 1/4 as severe as i ised to get it before using that stuff. i get PI at least 10 times a year, so its the difference between being able to work and not, so its a big deal for me.
and something with a lot of dicamba in it (search brushmaster), or a lot of triclopyr (search crossbow). adding methylated seed oil (or diesel fuel) will greatly improve efficacy.

pi year around threat, the vines and stems are potent all year round, ( yep I got a case of it middle of winter), what ever you do do not repeat " do not burn any of it" . UV rays will after time breakdown the oil. Best remedy for Coyotes is lead posioning via airmail by the way you also have a cross breed between wolfs and coyotes over there.
