That little vent hole is clever...its about using what you got. Every saw has this big fan pulling air across the saw why not also use it to better other heat affected areas. Heat shields, insulated heat reflecting tape are all great, but the simple drill hole dragging out all that heat may just Trump them all. Its funny you see something so simple like that and think....sheez how thick have we been for so long not to do that. lol

Here's something I think is real smart.

I thought you liked the number “4”this week. Then I thought the Krauts put half a swastika there.

Cool idea (no pun intended). Not sure our mufflers get that hot when the can gets open more, but smart none the less.

You think that’s why no more OeM silver heat shield tape? IIRC the 462 is devoid of that tape as are any new models I’ve played with that have the stainless muffler. Stainless is a terrible heat transfer material. I believe they went that route to keep more heat in the muffler to burn stuff up.

Does the heat deflector loop that jet up to the PTO Ex fins? Or is it standard looking?

Interesting OEM's appear to be moving away from strato technology. The major seat in the pants difference I noticed with strato saws was the amount of work you could do per tank. I wonder how saws like the 500i are meeting increased EPA regs. Whether its conventional porting and its Fi that's making the difference. Carbs & jetting have always in the EPA's firing line.

To me in time you would think that having that hole there it would pack up the back side of the muffler with saw dust. But just me thinking out loud for now. Lol
That could very well be true, but the blown air by the flywheel may help clean it out. I have to wonder how easy it would be to do that clean out job manually -- likely not easy.

That's the first thing that came to mind was how to keep debris and pitch out of that hole! Some of the timber I cut just flows resin out of the stump like syrup. It goes everywhere and sticks to everything including my beard lol

Good question Al. We'll look at that when I'm reassembling them. Remember a few days ago when I told you that everyone herewas sick except me? Well.......it's my turn now. I'm running a few new saws today and boxing them up. After that......I'm gonna go lay down.

If you cut knotty pines around here in summertime your covered in a mess. The trees perk like an old coffee pot. I seen gallons come out of one stump.

Sorry to hear that MM has a cold. It's going around along with the flu. I just saw a TV article that said, "big breasts = worse colds." I was having lunch at my favorite bar and told the hostess that she's likely to come down with the worst cold in eastern Nebraska. ;)
Did she ask you why? If so post pics of what she did to you after you told her.
