I noticed that you did not take down the pull cord assembly, flywheel, ignition module, etc. I guess that's all old hat. Something has to be. Right? Also, how easy is it to check for a good spark?

There's a trigger, and a generator under the flywheel......but I don't need to access any of that stuff.

Checking for spark should be like any engine.....

Interesting wash pattern. I'm surprised it's not more symmetrical.

It has maybe a minute of run time.....

"Any" engine? Typical old-fashioned spark checking does not work on M-Tronics. High-tech engines with all of these wires always amaze me. I'm not sure if they run on mixed fuel or electricity anymore.

LOL.....

I didn't know that. So having Bubba hold the wire in his mouth while I pull the rope won't help?

Now a look at the muffler baffle. Just seems to be made to direct the sound toward the recoil side.

I hashed this out on the 462 muffler with a former two stroke factory tech. and he thought it was to spread the out coming charge across the entire muffler instead of going splat at the end of the can. He saw something similar and likened it to how an air foil on the back of a car works. So the exhaust rolls around the lip and disperses from going straight ahead. That was the best guess we could come up with, could be something else altogether. Stihl wouldn't have gone to the trouble for nothing, there's something to it.

I still just drill out the spot welds, and pitch em in the trash.

They don't have theses at any local dealers. What do they cost? Kind of looks like a robot chainsaw, little too classy for most chainsaw operators, certainly this one. I'd show up on a job site in a truck that costs less then the saw.

On the 462, the baffle is symmetrical On the 500, the clutch side of the baffle protrudes out further which looks like it would sweep it toward the recoil side. Wonder what their reasoning is for having them different. Probably more voodoo

It’s pretty clear to me what was done with that funky exhaust port on the 462. They twisted the charge and started in the port instead of in the muffler. Its twisted away form the outlet to swirl in the can, cancel noise, and possible burn any residual hydrocarbons before they are emitted.

The 500i wasn’t done like that, but I do like the loop they created, also the baffle. I’m personally modding, but leaving the baffle on both. I figure the Bittbürger inspires better engineering than Heineken.

My bet on the difference is what the emissions were on FI vs Carb and real world experimentation to see what is gonna sell and work out.

Baffling and flow direction will cancel noise with less need for restriction and power loss. I like it. I find both the 462 and 500i to be louder than the Stihl’s of yesteryear right out of the box.

Thanks for the thread Randy. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.

I like the front handle AV handle spring under the saw that sits vertical opposed to horizontal, that makes sense. Also it appears with the vented air filter cover that they have done away with that stupid 'air injection'. Couldn't see any AI port. Hopefully that will stop those fine filter pleats getting packed with fine saw dust. I lova 5 cube saw, so glad to see them on Stihl shelves.
