Cost + availability was a big reason I got into reloading. My first two cartridge's were the 220 Swift and 348 Winchester. When I first got the Swift, only Norma made the ammo, and with I first got the 348 only Winchester made the ammo, and it was very hard to find.

I used to go around to hardware stores and buy old Rem + Win 348 ammo, most of NYS went shotgun (at the time), and the stuff was there for years! Got some good deals that way (I don't know what it is supposed to be, but this is the price that is on it).

My next rifle will be a wild cat. My first. I was never going to go that route until I found a couple places to hydro form brass so you aren't wasting time, money and barrel life fire forming. Going to be a 6mm Dasher. Ill be using a Bighorn single shot bolt action. Shilen barrel. Bix' n Andy 1.5 oz trigger. Stock will most likely be a Bobby Hart accublock br stock.

The Dasher is one that intrigues me as well. There’s some easily formed brass now. I have a 6.5 Creed. I’d like something lighter recoil for the wife like the Dasher or 6 creed.

Many I shoot with have 6ppc and 6mm br rifles. I just want something with a bit more umph without killing me with recoil. 4 major neck surgeries have ruled out pretty much anything over a 243 and even that needs to be heavy if I want to shoot more than a few. I never liked big recoil anyway, long b4 the neck deal, so really no big loss there. The 6br has 30% less powder if I recall. The dasher has a bit more than the 6br. My rifle will weigh north of 15lbs a bit with the scope so it should be fine. I use free recoil method in competition so that helps.

I was trying to get into PRS style shooting but don’t have the time. I want to get the wife a soft shooter for deer and maybe targets to go out to 800 yards or so. I think the Dasher from what a few guys I know are doing will work fine.

That's what I was thinking. I've shot 6 br rifles. Factory savage model 12 F class. It wasn't bad recoil wise and the weight was a bit less then what mine will be. It will be 1-8 twist for 95-108 pills. Ill try to stick to the 95's for my clubs future 600 yard range. We have a couple of 1000 yard ranges in Mi now so if I were to go play there I may try 105's or 8's A 243 would work well for your wife but you can get basically the same speed with 30% less powder and inherently better accuracy. Nothing wrong with a 243. It was my go to white tail cartridge when I was a hunter. 100 grain Nosler partitions. Drt every time. Dad stressed early on, blow the front shouders out so they can't run onto someone's property. Always worked.

I can reload any caliber so I figured the barrel life and accuracy is worth doing a dasher over a regular 243. Most don’t come with the 7.5-8 twist anyway so I’d be having a barrel spun up.

First time I've heard anything negative about Bergara. I plan to add a Tikka compact 308 to my stable unless a Ruger American stainless compact lands in my lap first.
I'm on the fence for a Tikka or Bergara rimfire to replace my Savage FVSR.

not mine but same model.
Ruger Hawkeye compact magnum in 308 Winchester. Model 37101
Replaced butt pad, and replaced barrel mounted rear sight with NECG receiver Mount rear peep. Heck of a rifle when I do my part. Never have had a scope on it, sub MOA with irons though. It doesn’t get much range work though as this thread suggests, it’s my primary hunting gun.

I did however find some federal legislation that I was unaware of before. 10 USC 4309, pertaining to ranges built with United States funds.
this is interesting in light of my earlier comments about ranges on federal installations.

I've used peep sights alot and never cared for barrel mounted peeps. I need it to be close to my eye, as in Ar15 or Lever gun tang mount.

My primary deer hunting rifle (308) have been Ruger for the past 15 years, but I am tired of the M77 type scope rings. I own many rifles and can't see the sense in proprietary rings. At one point, including rings seemed like a good value, but scope designs have changed and the M77 mounting system no longer suits eye relief and accessory needs.
I'm going to a compact 308, Ruger American, Tikka or Bergara will likely be my choice.
Opportunity will probably make the choice for me. My choice would be a stainless threaded Tikka though.

20191230_195234.jpg Not exactly an accuracy machine but kind of fun in its own right. Howa 1500 mini action in 300 AAC 16.5" heavy barrel bedded in Boyd's AT-1 silencerco Omega and ATN X-Sight 4k. Real good for making sure the dog does run off when I take her out in the evening.

For a hunting rifle the Ruger rings were solid as a rock, work real well, and saved a few bucks. I have M-77s in both 220 Swift and 300 Win Mag. They are old school with the tang safety.

Having learned to hunt with lever guns, I like the safety there, so I now also have 2 Ruger American Rifles (30-06 and 223).

To be technically correct it's a .300 AAC Blackout (AAC being the credited creators) SAAMI calls it .300 BLK and it'll shoot .300 whisper. it's a real Jack of all trades that's passable at some going from 110 Gr. at 2400 fps to 260+ gr. at 1000 fps. More cool than functional. Next build will be a .300 PRC lightweight build.

My Dad is gone, but he was also, Tank Destroyers - recon. Also in Battle of the Hedge Rows. Was one of only two men who were in the unit when they started who returned in the end.

I learned reloading on my own also. Got some verbal tips from one of my Uncle's friends, but that is about it. The reloading manuals had a lot of info and pics.

I've got the same patches, they were the original "Black Panthers"!!! My Dad was in the reserves when the war broke out, and his artillery's unit converted into 771st Tank Destroyers, but being in Reconnaissance, the got assigned everywhere.

Your Dad has to be one of the few remaining alive today!

Couldn’t agree more about the proprietary rings. That drove me bonkers a while ago. Below is my rifle now that I had the time to take some pictures.
