I don't run any of my saws dry, I just try not to let any of them no run for too long. None of them run during my 2.5 month tax season, but they seem to be able to survive that just fine.

If you mix your gas with 2 cycle oil that has stabilizer right away, I think it stays good for a several months.

Finally got my saw! First new Stihl for me, very impressed with the build quality. First impressions after running it is that it reminds me of my 2171. Ergonomics, acceleration, power is very similar. I’ll need to form better opinions after much more time with it but so far I like it and I think it’ll be with me a long time.

Side note, my old man retires in a few days from a long career selling and wrenching on power sports equipment. Part of the reason I went with the 462, he’s very proud to sell me his last saw and my first Stihl. He signed this under the top cover.

I always get a kick out of the cool-aid drinkers of any flavor. There are too' many good to great tools out there not to try one from another brand and see what's good and bad about it. I'm mostly a Husky guy, but could be setup straight Makita, Husqvarna, Stihl or Echo and be fine for firewood with good tools. It's actually a pretty neat problem to have!

I don't knock other brands, just stick to Stihl myself so I can exchange B+C from any of them, 261-660/710 (big bore). Also, same air filter on 044/440, 046/460, and 066/660. It just helps to keep it a little simpler for me.

I have stihl and Dolmar abs use the same bar abs chain for each. Someday you will figure it out as I’m not the only one who has multiple brands and swaps bars and chains.

That simply shouldn't be, I mean it's extremely common for people to run a saw dry. It just doesn't make sense to me, I hope something else is going on.

Now I've had more than my fair share of issues with the 550 and 562, but they seem fine after I run them dry for storage.

The more and more I'm around the AT saws the less and less I like them, even with the 572 running flawlessly.[emoji111]

I watch m-tronic saws get run out of fuel every day..never saw it to be an issue, I do it myself all the time.

Might just be my experience though.

I don't think it happens just from the saw running out of fuel, I think it was cause the guy was in a tree and kept re starting it and running it out of fuel about a 1/2 dozen times at different angles. It likely takes some effort to trigger it, but I believe that is what happened. I can tell you it took about 6 tanks to recover, I did not change any parts, and it has run just fine since then, but, I don't let it run completely dry anymore. Better safe than sorry.

Maybe Julian would want to test it!!! I'll be happy to never see it happen again!

If it took that long to adjust, I suspect something else was going on, the system should adjust within a matter of seconds IMHO.

Merry Xmas to you Mike.[emoji268]

Should yes … but I think my experience was similar to what others experienced w/o any explanation. What I stated is my "best guess" as to what happened, and fits what has happened to several other folks. I know the computer is programmed to protect against "leans", and when I discussed what I was going through with a knowledgeable dealer, he was not too surprised and basically told me "it would work itself out".

If you have a different, valid explanation for what may have happened, I'd love to hear it.

The local Stihl shop mostly serves the homeowner market and the ms462 isn't a big seller. The ms362 is as big as most people want as a firewood/general purpose saw. Husky owns the commercial 70cc market around here.

Hell, one of my best semi-local dealer only gets the nicer saws in when someone special orders one. His market is the MS170-MS211. He sometimes has as large as a MS291-MS391, but rarely. Most of the farmers and ranchers he sells to would be better served with a 261 to a 462 for the Oak and Hedge around here, but he convinces them to buy smaller. I'll never understand it, especially selling to people buying $100K+ tractors.

Now, as far as knowledge and service, he's the best around here, by far, and I consider Him a good friend, but I don't understand the business model. I will continue to support Him as best as I can though, as I truly appreciate the brick and mortar outfits, especially with friendly, dependable and reputable customer service

I purchased my 10 mm 044 new in Dec 92. The carb has been rebuilt, and the crushed tank holder replaced, but all the bearings, P+C and even the rings are original.

When you look at it from that perspective, my Dad's advice comes into play: "Quality will be remembered long after the price paid is forgotten". I really don't remember what I paid for it, but I do remember I thought it was expensive at the time. Glad I did it though.

The 462 is the hot ticket item on Stihl shelves. Why wouldn't you buy one.
