The chain runs across the bar at about 60 mph, depending somewhat on the engine's RPM at WOT and the sprocket size. I've never clocked it with a strobe, but that seems about right. Hope you are OK, Rogue.

I've worked on several chains damaged like this that loggers ask me to repair if possible. Occasionally I replace the messed-up links if the chain is fairly new.

These guys are usually cutting cottonwood trees for pallet making companies and they can run into just about anything imbedded in the log. The power of the 088 and other logger saws will cut a big nail in half, but the chain takes a beating just as you show here.

I almost wonder if the saw wasn’t oiler wasn’t oiling sufficiently, or turned up enough to cause the chain to wear that fast. I’ve never worn out a chain itself before the cutters were worn out.

Ditch that chin. See the bottom on the links? Worn out man!
Um nope I don't think so ...... how many hard nose bars have you run . And I think this bloke has a handle on when a chain is done that and look at the wear indicators ......

Oiler on max plenty of oil.
Chain looks dry in pics as it's not been used in bout 2years.
Plenty of life left in that chain after I change the busted link and give it a good sharpen.
Some wear on the bottom of the links is normal running hard nose bars the chain has to pass around the hardened nose of the bar which is 10 times harder than the chain. is nothing to stress about Stihl put a wear indercater on the bottom of the cutter links for this reason.
When using the top of the bar to cut with on hard nose bars that will put massive load on the hardend nose of the bar.

Enlighten me on wear indicators on .404 chain
You can clearly see the wear indicator (bottom of link) in this pic??
Still plenty of life left I'll get my money's worth out of it yet down here that's an $80 chain.

The reason that chain is so floged and beaten up is the last time I used it I was cutting dirty rotton wood full of dirt and rocks I had it smoking red hot! Lol
I knew I'd smoke the chain cutting this log but I got it all cut up eventually after a fair few sharpens.
This is vid of the log I smoked that chain in.
